Does it seem to anyone else that 2142 is simply like a mod of BF2 with futuristic looks?

Although I haven't played beta or anything, almost everything I've read was already done much better in the earlier Tribes games.

For those that have played beta, what is dramatically different than BF2 gameplay?

Im not gonna pay to play a demo or a beta, so yes, its a futuristic bf2 clone, with out ever touching it.

its the same game engine, so yes, its basically a mod.  There are what EA calls "Tweaks" to the engine.  Hopefully these tweaks will help improve performance in the game and there will be less bugs than bf2.  they said they tweaked the menu, but i think it is still bad (beta).  When you clicked something, it would fade out the menu and into what you clicked.  If you clicked another menu while this was happening, it would not change to that menu and would be highlighted.

And for what is different...

It is the same basic concept, but the titan mode is a lot different.  The graphics are improved and there are a lot of new weapons, unlocks, and new temporary unlocks (for that round) called "field upgrades".  Go to bf2142.com for any information you want to see about the game.  They got like everything.

What I don't get is if it the same game engine, why have the minimum req risen so much.

I don't know about the req. either, but it does feel and look like a mod to me, I'll most likely still get it, but it feels like a "very good" mod.

It is quite different but if you're expecting a totally new experience, then your gonna be disapointed.

Better graphics and "lasers" (railguns, tanks, walkers, etc have laser-like effects) require more power. Also, the requirements for BF2 were always a bit low.

The game IS a futuristic version of BF2, that is to say they use the same engine. I guess if 2142 is a clone of bf2 you could probably call bf2 a clone of 1942, but rational people like you and me know that the games are different experiences, just like 2142 will be. 2142 has a lot of new things in it that change the dynamics of game play, and promotes teamwork and balance. This game will not be solely for the CS crowd, it caters to people like me who play casually a few hours a week. Lots of vehicles, lots of spawn points. Kills are worth less points. The new rank system will also cater to casual players (they will have a bonus for time you don't play), and the points are less between ranks.

It is my opinion they learned their lesson with BF2, took a lot of the stuff that imbalanced the game and turned it into something that I would be proud to play. I think that if you play BF2 for fun, you will like 2142.
Like me you will find it a welcome change of pace to people camping your spawn points, and tossing grenades at random hoping you are close enough to get a kill. If you play it just to get points and badges and brag about it to a bunch of people you never met, then you might be happier sticking to game that caters more to people who play 600+ hrs like Bf2.

One last thing; some people seem determined to be as negative as possible when it comes to their opinions on this game. I suppose it would be possible to formulate an opinion about this game even only having played the beta (I certainly have). However look at the quality of what the negative people have said so far. Most are terse statements, often just badmouthing the game without backing anything up with facts or even educated opinions. Not one negative thing about this game that I have read on this web board has been even slightly intelligently written, or objectively thought out. They are usually like "This is gonna suck, because I don't like bf2, but find some prepubescent urge to visit this site everyday and voice my discontent" I guess I don't mind the negativity, it's the overly simplistic manner with which a few vocal members of this community are acting.

As have been said plenty of times... 2142 is to BF2 what BF:Vietnam was to BF1942.

Same engine, same game, slightly different game play but basically just a way to advance the franchise without having to create a new game.

All Hail BF1942 B.C.

BF2142 is not just a BF2 mod. It's got many, many new bugs to!

I agree with P581. If u think its a mod then fine, jus stop whining about it. No one is forcing you to buy the game. So its got the same engine as BF2 but with some things changed? And.....ur point is? Why care over such trivial matters?

It does use the same engine, and I suppose you could mod BF 2 into something very close to BF 2142 if you had enough free time and people, but it's not unusual re-using the same engine (though in my opinion, next game has to come out with a better one which utilizes dual-core etc).

Simply put, it's Battlefield 2, but with some very new elements added in.  Sorta like a "total conversion mod" where the core gameplay remains similar, but you've got a much different overall experience.

A game engine can be used for many different games. Unreal, Quake, HL engines have all been used for different games by different developers. Each game is completely different from its counter-parts. What you are confusing 2142 with these other games is that 2142 is in the SAME series as BF2. Its SUPPOSED to be similar to BF2 with a different element.  For DICE to create a brand new engine for 2142 they'd have to take serveral years of development to do it. A mod takes serveral components of a current game and changes it. 2142 just takes the ENGINE and builds the rest from the ground up.

2142 is by far a mod for BF2.

The graphics engine had an overhaul, it seems Im running on the same specs as BF2 but on 2142 everything looks much better

Load Times are signifigantly decreased

There are heaps more effects going on, not like BF2 where the only effects were Explosions and Vapour Trails
