Its a core 2 duo E6600, 2gb pc2 6400 (800mhz) RAM, etc etc....

So, quite top-of-the range....

Just to give you a rough idea, have a look here.

This is how nvidia cards perform with the BF2142 engine which is pretty much exaclty the same as BF2. These are the performances of cards at 2xAA so with full AA they would be a lot slower. I'd say that the card you want is gonna struggle at full AA.

Just my opinion. Obviously it depends on your budget and what res you want to run at, but I'd go for a 7900 or 7950 based nvidia, or the 1900 or 1950 ATI cards if you want to get BF2 as pretty as possible but it still remain at a playable fps.

Yeah by the way, I noticed that I can't turn on any AA in bf2.

No matter what I select, 2x or 4x, after I click apply it goes back to "off"

Man, any ideas?

Check your GLOBAL driver settings for your graphix card. Make sure AA is set to application controlled. It sounds like it is set to always Off instead. Thats what i would think is happening. Try that and see.

Would a 7600GT be able to play on high / full AA settings  on bf2? Just wondering because im about to get it
No, it's not an uber powerful card. High yes (assuming you have over a gig of RAM), but AA no. Just run a high resolution though like I do (1600x1200) and AA will become pointless.

NO, Not with full AA. With full AF yes, But not full AA. Driver settings MUST be set at Application Preference so the driver and the games settings ar not fighting each other also.
what are you talking about? My old 6800 gt would run all high 4x AA at 1600 x 1200 res.  It would be fine if you had 2 gbs of ram and a good proc...

I have a 6800 GT OC and if I turn all my settings to high (even with no AA), I get like 30-40 FPS.

That doesn't have anything to do with graphics though, only physics and textures.

Your video card is still the one handling shadows (right?), effects (major FPS killer), AA, etc.

A 6800 and a 7600gs are totally different cards. The GS series cards didnt even have driver support until about just last april, and the drivers were crap and very glitchy for BF2. Theres a BIG difference between 4xAA and the 8XAA he can run, and also, Your GT i would guess had more Pixel pipelines yes? Like say 16? While his card has 12 i think. That makes a hell of a difference.

And to think some people turn the gfx all the way down, including shadows off!! for that little advantage!! I dont get it?
I'd rather have the quality, including shadows, any time.
I've only ever played BF2 with a 7800GT and 2Gig ram, everything on full/high.

Yeah, I was when I got home. I found my gfx card which had come by special delivery and opened it. It was an XFX GeForce 7900GT which I had bought from eBay.

OMFG!!!! So I installed it and stuff and started playing bf2, OMFG! To actually play bf2 like that, after going for so long at all low settings, it was too much.

I was fucking dancing. My heart rate was stupidly high, but...

One problem, I don't have a router and now there are two comps.

Fuck. Straight after school tomorrow, I'm gonna take the modem out of my older computer and stick it in the new one andplay some bf2 online.

OMFG! I can't believe my behaviour, never had that feeling before.... where it's like you're so excited and you can't do anything.
Bloody Hell, imagine his reaction when he pops his cherry

Man I have 2 7900GTX's in SLI and a AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 dual core, 2 gigs of DDR500. And I still can't max the game out. Have to run AA at 4x. AF at 16x though! Get about 75-100+ FPS.

But I know how you feel! Went from 2 6800GS's. Was able to run all high no AA or AF. Was only getting about 25-45 fps. Res at 1600x1200. Wish the game would like me run at my monitors max of 1920x1200!
