I remember reading an article in Popular Science about a year ago that said that people who play FPS games on a regular basis, have something like 40% faster reaction times than non gamers, and that these gamers make for better drivers.
I quote you cause I agree. First time I drove a stick and car for that matter, (age 14), had no problem shifting and driving through the crowded streets of a small town in India.

On-line gaming has helped me in many ways, for instance. I never knew how to download illegal copies of dvd rips until i started playing on-line. I also never knew how to download new games and actually crack them and get them to work on my puter. LOL Seriously though gaming has given me a venue to allow my RL  to take a break. To be able to log and release some stress is always a good thing. Also, the computer knowledge you gain is always a plus.

You pick flowers for a hobby?

I wouldnt say that video games are completely useless to people.  Supposedly studies have been done and say that video games improve players hand-eye coordination.  I would say that could be justified and I would say its true.  I would not say that it has completely made my life better with relationships, team skills, etc.  Hand eye coordination at most.  I cant see much more than that.

Golf for example, has no further application than BF2 in everyday life or otherwise.

Sounds like this non-gamer is an opinionated, closed minded dick. Same kind that try to ban games - *Looks at American politics*

I'm noticing a correlation here based on the stats of the people who have responded...

It seems to me that the people who have responded saying that they have noticed improvements in reflexes, hand-eye coordination, etc., generally have pretty good stats.

The ones who respond saying that the game is mindless and that they haven't noticed that BF is useful in any aspect of their everyday life generally have poor stats.

Interesting.

SimCity taught me how to plan out my garden.

Total War taught me how to use proper strategy to flank enemies and use every advantage possible. Also taught me that a full-out army of archers/musketeers sometimes have more use than a mixed and balanced army.

GTA 1 taught me how to jack cars and escape police by jumping bridges.

Baldur's Gate/NWN taught me to wear extra knee pads, wrist bands and gold-coloured rings for +1 AC.

Red Alert/C&C taught me the way for World Domin-... Er, I mean... Hand guns are non-lethal, as they take +8 shots to kill a person. Likewise with bazookas. Flamethrowers are the way!

Battlefield 1942 told me that planes can be landed on top of a hangar roof, and can take off again, without sustaining any damage.

Sniper Elite taught me that a sniper can easily carry a sniper rifle, an MG-42, 7 frag grenades, 7 stick grenades, 7 wire grenades, LAW, and several bags of medpacks/etc... And STILL sneak by several enemies completely unnoticed.

Solitare just made me want to jump off a very tall building.

...

Seriously though, the only thing I could see being improved by game, is hand-to-eye reflex, optic identification and multitasking.
If you play a lot of realistic simulators, I guess you'd also gain a certain dregree of skill in whatever you played. Flight sims being used for training, etc.

Haha, I was just thinking about this today at work before i got home!
I was assisting another surgeon perform a laproscopic appendicectomy today (removal of the appendix via key hole surgery in which 3 ports are made into the abdomen - 2 for tools and one for the camera which displays the image on an LCD screen in theatre) it was my job to manipulate the camera in the abdominal cavity to allow the other surgeon with the tools (such as scissors, forcep, etc.) to see what he was working on.
I don't find that terribly difficult and then it struck me.....this is like being the pilot in an attack chopper with the other surgeon as the gunner
I got to give him the best angle and view to make the shot/remove the appendix.
So from my point of view - BF2 just helped save a life today
Hehe - keep it real

If it wasn't for BF2 i'd spend 190 hours of the last 6 months wasting my time on something else.

BF2 allows you to kill people while killing time.

Video games teach us alot of skills that you can't really put down on paper. The amount of logic your brain deals with in any video are some of the main skills we develop. But there is tons of stuff. Some of BF2 are:

Teamwork and communication
Leadership / Fellowship
Logical Reasoning
Desicion Making
Risk vs. Reward
Analyze and React (commanders view mostly)
Mathmatics:
      - geometry (angle of site mostly)
Physics:
      - trajectory (nades, bullet drop)
      - acceleration, deceleration (gotta slow down to turn sharper)
      - speed in movement (similar to above)
Then there are the things that are truly important for life skills:

Developing character (although bf2 is full of bad apples)
Trust (shown through teamwork)
Communication again
Dealing with both loss and gain (kids today expect to be treated equal in a world that is not equal, losing is a part of life and must be learn in order to carry yourself through any kind of situation)
Critial Thinking & Instinct (many times, they must react instead of think)

These are just a couple that deal with FPS games. If you play RPGs, there is a world of logical puzzle solving and reading skills. I was way ahead of the kids in my class in reading, but i rarely read a book. I was busy reading on games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior.

Playing games won't make you smart, but it is not a waste of time either. Just make sure you still get out and have a social life, and that kids play outside. Moderation is the key.
