Several people have stated that they have been having performance issues since the new patch. I am running a P4 3.0 on an ASUS motherboard with a GB of RAM and SATA drive on a Charter Cable connection. My vid card is a GeForce FX 5200 AGP. If I lower the graphics to a minimal level ingame, I have less problems, but any higher graphics settings results in extremely degraded performance. This was less so under the previous patch. Anybody have any suggestions? I am considering upgrading my machine, but after reading CPU reviews, the only major performance upgrade would be switching from AGP to PCI Express x16.

Please offer your EDUCATED suggestions!!
THANKS!!!!

Well, you could definately use a new(er) video card. You don't need the biggest and fanciest, its kind of a waste of money. I've been looking around recently and something in the $200-300 price range would probably be sufficient.

ATI X850XT or GeForce 6800 GT should do pretty well. Definately PCI-Express, since its where graphics are headed. Since you're running a Pentium Processor (I am assuming you are sticking with that) then you might also want to upgrade to DDR2 as its clocked faster.

MY EDUCATED suggestion is to post in the correct forums. I'll move this to the BF2-Help for you though!

Changing your shadow and lighting settings to minimal first is going to have the biggest impact on your FPS setup.  Shadows?  I mean really.  I have played almost 60 hours of SF on a 64 man server and there is so many bullets, grenades, flashbangs etc. going on, I don't really think your going to miss high detail shadows...lol.  You should definitely think about another Gig of ram and a better Vid card though.

Your biggest set-back is the graphics card. You need to get a PCI card for sure. The thing Im not sure about is if it will "bottleneck" with your other components.

I will include the video card comparison chart below FYI. I have the ATI X600 ("256" but really 128/128)
If I remember correctly - on the game settings, The first two settings are meduim and the rest are on low except I have AA and the dynamics OFF. I still get some "anomalies" or graphic glitches, but they are occasional and only mildly irritating. Switching to the Omega drivers helped alittle, but nothing major.

Hope this helps with your graphics card search.

also, if I remember correctly, EA changed the graphics card requirements with the 1.12 patch. I wonder if your graphics card is still on their "list"...

As most guys have suggested, getting a better card would be a start.

Interesting. I just ordered a GeForce 6800GT PCI Express x16 w/ 256 RAM to go w/ a P4 LGA775 64 bit proc., 1Gig of DDR2 RAM, an ASUS Motherboard, and a SATA 2 drive, so I hope that this will help. The Vid card chart was awesome! I wish I could have found that. I never thought to search for comparisons instead of reviews. I will also go back and double check the shadows setting. I think that it is on low, but I know that the anti-aliasing is completely off. I will also check the BF2 notes for the 1.12 patch.

Thanks for all of the help!!

What I am curious about it what are the specs for the monster machine that would run BF2 with all graphics and audio settings maxed out, because it seems that the software is well ahead of the hardware.

THANKS AGAIN!!!

They say that most really video intensive games are indeed ahead of the current technology.

Im not one to be fiddling with computer, for their sake of course lo.. I bought a Radeon9250 graphics card before the patch came out and it seems to be working fine but ever since the new patch it seems that everything has slowed down considerably.  Its a 256 Mb, 128, bit video card so i just want some aopinion on whether it will suffice or not.. Im scared to know the anwser cause i bought it 2 months ago.

The game definitely got slower with 1.12.  I ended up dropping a bunch of settings to get teh same performance.

Well you shouldn't really be running BF2 on that graphics card anyway, also dont spend all your money on cards you wont need. Nvidia 6600GT 128MB card is fine and it's only 100 quid, probably cheaper in the states.Me and lots of BF2 gamers I know use them and they are good at providing 60-70 fps on medium qualtiy graphics.

I second this post .... although EA are recommending 6800GT or greater.

To the original poster... PCI is considered 'future proofing'... in other words. It is the way the gaming industry is going, so changing to PCI is without a doubt, the way forward

I got a 9800xt and after the patch I started getting really bad arifacts, geometry will go black and I will see black polygons for half a second or so where there should be ground or something there. Before this never happened, and I ran at 1600 x 1200 at low fine...

i run a fx5200 as well, with a gig of ram on a 3400+.  the game ran great at 1028x754 or whatever the res. is.  after the patch it lagged so bad i had to bump it down to 800x600.  imo, thats retarded.

I've definitely been noticing more "hiccups", it is especially annoying when flying to have the display freeze for a second, and when it unfreezes I've piled the plane into a nuke plant cooling tower or something. Dammit!

If only it wasn't so damn addictive.. DAMN YOU EA!!!

Follow-up note:

I just did a massive upgrade. I put in a P4 64bit HT proccessor w/ 1gig ddr2 RAM, a 250 gig sata2 drive, AND a eVGA Geforce 6800 GT with 256MB DDR3 RAM on a PCI express x16.

The only time that I have major problems is when I max out all of the settings. Also, it seems like the game is a little less screwy when the game is a clean install and patched directly to 1.12.

I just upgraded my Radeon 9200 to a Radeon x850 PRO last week.  Why did they have to go and f*** s*** up ???  Every game I have ever played online does this crap - just leave a good thing alone will ya!  Now I am getting constant connection problems that I never had before.  Not that that has anything to do with my card ( I don't think ?) but I have set my graphics to medium now.  I did a clean install and patched also.  I have a P4 3.20GHz and a GB of RAM
