Maybe its a bit of a noobish question,  but i can't seem to find an answer to this.
Do you actually see more in width compared to a normal tft,   or is the image just streched out to fit te whole screen.
i ask this because i saw some screenshots of a widescreen,  and it looked to me the minimap wasn't perfectly round,  more like an oval,   so im guessing its just streched.

Depends.  If the game supports widescreen settings, you will not get a stretched effect and you will have a wider field of view.  If you force widescreen settings  then you will get the stretched effect you described and it will actually chop a bit off the top and bottom.

Nah.. Like the dude above me posted... It depends on your settings.

Normally a game (and monitor) runs in say 1024x768. Wide screen is 1440x900. So if I run the first one on a wide screen I'll get a streched out image... It'll look pretty weird in some cases, but I'll work. If I do vice versa, I'll have a compressed image.

It's the same as with TVs, the 4:3 vs the 16:9. The equirements are the same. If your movie is in a specific format, your TV must be able to process this information (display, or cut and display).

So in answer to your Q.... If I set my game res to 1280x1024 or some other "regular" res, then yes.. I will get a streched out effect. But if I set my res to 1440x900 or some other widescreen format, then no, the game will look just normal. The only downside is that I have to set the res manually.

I run BF2 in 1680x1050, well I did until I had to go back to using my old 6600GT . Looked ok to me.

Had to fiddle about with it a bit to get it working though.
