I swear that it is posessed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back in June, windows XP/pro crashed on me. I tried the repair option but I got nowhere fast. Ended up having to re-format and and go through all that crap. Everything seemed fine until two days ago. I powered it up and I get the same message as last time. Something about a corrupt windows\system32 problem. SO, I tried to run the repair system thing again and again no luck. So that left me with re-formating and starting all fracking over, AGAIN!
Here's the catch. Now the damn thing won't even re-instal. Tried like three times now and have gotten three different error messages (can't remember what they were). Has anybody got any suggestions, other than pulling out the .45 and shooting the frickin thing.

Yah, sounds like hard disk problems. Bad sectors maybe?
If it's not HD, then it could be RAM or motherboard problems, but I'd be running some chkdsk's through your drive first.

If you can boot to recovery console, try running "chkdsk /r" there, otherwise attach your drive to another computer and try scanning it from there.

The HD is a maxtor 7200 rpm 200gb. I'll try again when I get home in the morning (at work right now). Thanks for the quick replys, I'll give an update when I get the chance.

Hi Manders01, id have to agree with the above it does sound like your hdd is shot but it is definantly worth trying the chkdsk facility, for a more complete description of how to run it if your not sure check my post under the thread "Oh fuck, help me out, Computer wont boot". If that doesnt work its always worth ruling out the cables as the cause of a communication problem before you replace the hdd although cable probs are pretty rare.

i had almost the same thing once, was not the harddisk, but a virus on the harddisk, that even knew how to prevent to format the damn thing. (not BIOS virus). we finely got it done after 3-4 weeks but no-one in our family knew much about PC's then

Here's the update: Still trying to get the software downloaded from Maxtor.com. It's telling me that i can only download it onto a 3 1/2 floppy.......uhhh WTF! I don't even own one anymore. Anyway, Ran the chkdsk and it came back clean. If I can ever get Maxtors drive tester down loaded, I'll see about getting this thing in under warranty.

I did get xp re-installed and it worrked fine for about a day. Never did get my internet connection back though. Having to do everything through a friends PC. Last night, when I went to start it up it took almost 45 minutes to finally get through the windows loading screen. God forbid I actually wanted to do anything though. The little light that tells me when the HD is working was on and that thing was wound up and the whole time.

Oh well wish me luck.

Actually I had a very similar problem as yours (right down to the error messages at install). Each time it was a different windows file that was corrupt during install. After MANY tries windows install would eventually get through with no file errors. After that system would seem stable for a few months and then a meltdown just like yours. After 3 repeats of this I finally narrowed it down to bad ram (OCZ Platinum Rev. 2) luckily OCZ has a lifetime warranty and it was replaced. Been rock solid ever since.

Swap out your ram if possible to rule this out. I would bet money its your ram, this sounds EXACTLY like my experience (gun and all).

When you re-format, create a partition with like 4 - 5GB on it. Then, install XP on another partition. Sometimes the sectors will go bad in the first bit of diskspace.

Once you get it running, go to Start -> Run and type "chkdsk /r". It will scan for bad sectors, and isolate them so they won't be used anymore.

Hey, ShotYourSix......I'm running 2 gig of ocz memory. can I cut it back to 1 gig and see if I can narrow down a bad stick???? Would that even work?

Is there any other way to test the ram?

What kind of motherboard do you have. I have had the same problem with the combination of a Asus mobo woth a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 HD.

Maxtor = BAD

I switched back again to good old Western Digital and never had any problems ever since.

Yeah, mine was an ASUS A8N-SLI with 2 GB OCZ Platinum Rev. 2.

OCZ have a lifetime warranty, it may be easier just to RMA both sticks of ram and hopefully they will replace them both (they did for me).

Mobo is ABIT AN8 32x if that helps. As soon as my computer savvy buddy gets back from Vegas I'll have him run the memtest thinggy. As you can guess, me and computers don't get along.

I would try it myself, but I cannot even get the thing to connect to the Internet right now. That's a whole other story for a different time.....lol

Had a problem with my case intrusion alarm going off all the time on my Alienware Area 51. Everytime i would leave the house i would come home to the alarm blaring throughout my house. Called tech support and they stated that the only way the alarm would go off is if someone had tried to open the case while the front door was locked. I always locked it b/c I have a collection of movies that are private in nature (animes!) Found out later that my then gf was opening my case to turn on my system so she could see who was on my yahoo messenger list. WTF

Well, Here's a REALLY stupid question......... Looking at my windows XP disk, it says in fine print that it is ONLY to be used with a dell computer. Ummmmm.........this aint no frackin dell. Could that even remotely be part of the problem??????????????

Yeah Dell OEM Windows disk. I had a computer repair customer bring in a Dell disk with their HP and wanted me to install xp using the disk. Of course I didnt do it but I did find out that they tried to install xp using the Dell disk and had problems.

It's still a full Windows disk...just need to get the right cd key. The other disk(s) that comes with it has the drivers and dell specific stuff.

Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it
