I keep getting the following problem:

Game freezes.
Screen goes black.
Loads of HDD access.
Can sometimes ALT-TAB away and back to get picture back, but increasingly not.

This has happened with both my video card (X800XT PE) and a friends spare (9600XT), but does it more often with mine.

When I can't get it back, have to reset and then have following error in Event Viewer:

The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
Have the latest Catalyst drivers.
Don't have latest windows updates (I don't install updates - like to keep my gaming install sleek and lean).

Friend has suggested it's a PSU problem.

But, has anyone else come across this problem? Any other suggestions for what it might be? Can anyone suggest something with which I could sink-test my PC and monitor power supply?

1st step: remove ATI graphics card from system
2nd step: find heavy object and smash previously mentioned ATI graphics card into very small pieces
3rd step: go to local electronics store and purchase Nvidia product, if none are available go to your online retailer of choice and purchase Nvidia product.
4th step: Insert Nvidia product into system, install drivers for said product which will amaze you because they actually work. Live in peaceful bliss happily ever after

And once thats done, smash your ATI card some more for stress relief.

Oh, if I could afford to go out and buy a replacement I would happily smash it to atoms!

Anyone got any serious suggestions?

use driver cleaner to get rid off the ati drivers and reinstall them. also you should install windows updates as they dont hurt your performance at all
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I know how to solve this.

Step 1: Remove ATI card from mobo.
Step 2: Insert nVidia card.
Step 3: Enjoy.

i've got a similar problem, and i have a nvidia card (XFX 7800GT xtreme gamer).

The screen freezes, the sound is just in a loop and i loose the connection to the server.
A friend of mine also have the same problem as i have.

But i'm not sure, whether it is the graphics card, or another part of my hardware...

I was thinking your post was a bit lame after the original Nvidia fanboy tribute.

To the OP, do you have enough cooling in your machine?  Are all your fans working?  It sounds to me like your graphics card is getting too hot and shutting down, or something similar.

Yeah, the cooling is fine. I have an Antec P160 with two 120mm fans - one front bottom, one rear below the PSU, an ATI Silencer on my X800 and I can't remember what CPU cooler - summat carnival I think - yellow and black thing.
Also, I'm used to overheating issues from the hot summer we've had in the UK and so I know what temps my system is happy with and, as far as I can tell (obviously, I can't check the actual temps whilst it locked up), from having ATITool running and the case temp sensor readouts (one sensor near case intake, one sitting on back side of ATI Silencer) it's not getting anywhere near 'too hot'...

Sorry, should have also said I've a couple of BSODs without memory dumps or error log entries - which led to the thought it might be the PSU failing.

But I get the feeling that there's a couple of issues interplaying with one another here, so whilst I can't currently afford to replace my PSU to see if it is just that, I might be able to improve matters a little if I could just work out exactly what's going on...

On the subject of windows updates - unless I can get some definitive evidence that allowing windows to clog up XP with updates will solve my problem, no thanks! As I said I run my gaming rig lean and mean - it's only 1GB RAM (DDR Dual channel, but still only 1GB) so I need all the memory I can muster. Also, I pretty sure it's not that, and it's not the ATI drivers because I've tried different drivers and it's not that I've always had this problem with this card - it started fairly recently - maybe 6months or so ago - is kinda patchy - sometimes it doesn't do it for a week or two, then I'll get a week or two of not being able to play more than 10-15mins without having a lock-up - it usually copes with the first lock-up and comes back, but then the second usually kills it...

Hope this helps.
The best way to uninstall old drivers and install new (thanks to www.mvktech.net):
1. disconnect from net.
2. disable antivirus
3. uninstall current video driver (remove from add/remove programs in controlpanel).
4. reboot
5. as the reboot comes, after the quick memory test/HD recognition, hit F8 and enter safe mode.
6. Win XP safe mode will autodetect new hardward and ask to install driver. Cancel.
7. run Driver Cleaner Pro (www.drivercleaner.net) with filter for Your driver.
8. quit and repeat step 4 and 5.
9. install new video driver.
10. reboot.
11. start antivirus and connect to net (reboot if nessesary). This is the best way to completely remove an old driver and install a new.
12. install DirectX.
13. install overclock tool (not needed unless OCing).
14. reboot.
15. install monitor driver
You're good to go.

Cheers Freke, but I did a complete reinstall of XP and everything. I'm pretty sure it's not a driver issue.
