Today I was headed back home from Newark, New Jersey. I was waiting on the platform for my train when all of the sudden there was an explosion. I felt a wave of heat and the flash blinded me for a few seconds, but then I realized what had happened. A helium balloon had collided with one of the power lines above the tracks. Now, in spite of this, only a few people were startled and no one panicked. Once I realized it was a balloon I started laughing. However the cops did come up with the "I'm gonna get me an A-rab" attitude. In the end, it caused a 2 hour delay on me getting home because a fuse was blown. (Note: Amtrak is pretty inept and NJ Transit are assholes. NJ Transit found the problem and fixed their track, but not ours. We had to have a rescue engine tow us out.)

My question is, judging from the lack of "Oh my god we're all going to die!," has the current administration's angle of "The terrorists are out to kill you" that so effectively brought security moms to their side during the 2004 election become ineffective. I sure hope so.

I think it was the outside of the balloon. It wasn't a rubber one, it was one of those metallic ones. The Amtrak people said it was essentially a freak accident from the train I was waiting on entering that section of wires just as the balloon made contact.

helium isn't flammable.  Hydrogen is.  That's why we use He in airships and not H, like the hindenburg did...  lol.

People in the US are still comfortable with the knowledge that they aren't likely to perish in a fiery café explosion. Frequent fliers are a bit more paranoid, but not by very much. Terrorism just doesn't happen enough here for most people to really worry about it.

I haven't seen any after me personally, to be honest.

+1 for mentioning attacks that occured to non-US targets though. Everyone else just seems to forget about those, but not 9/11. NEVER FORGET 9/11. EVER. NEVER EVER.

I imagine that if you stood in the middle of the street in Saudi Arabia with an American flag hung about your shoulders as a cloak, things may be a bit different. Either that, or some old guy would run up, clobber you over the head, and drag you out of sight to save you from yourself.

Appreciate the karma, but I have never forgotten all of the other attacks, it is because of of the collective attacks on all of us that makes me such a staunch supporter on fighting and defeating these radicals. I hope I have never left the impression of an attitude that suggested " I AM AN AMERICAN HOW DARE YOU ATTACK US." If you got that from my posts, then I need to do a better job posting.

I think this is a problem for all of us to deal with not just the USA. I only wish more countries including ours took defeating this threat a little more seriously. That is to say let go of the "political correctness" and get the job done.

I didn't get that from your posts. On here and people I encounter everyday, no one really cared about terrorist attacks. Even the attacks in Tanzania and Nairobi. Oklahoma City and Atlanta really only affected a few people compared to the WTC attacks. I don't know if that's because they weren't Islam related or what. After 9/11 there was a worldwide outpouring of sympathy that I don't remember us giving to any previous terror attack. So 9/11 hits and then we have a WAR ON TERROR. Now we're hardcore about fighting terrorist right? I'm not going to debate right now on its effectiveness. Madrid and London were bombed as well. I didn't feel like Americans as a whole really gave a damn. I felt like it didn't happen to us so it's not that big of a deal yet it was twisted to make people more afraid.

So again, I do commend you for remembering those attacks and considering them as vital to your viewpoints as anything else. Attacks may vary in severity, location, and significance of the target, but they are all still attacks. More people should remember that.

I do agree with you, we as Americans are/were shielded from events that happen a world away. We may also become jaded since it is not perticulary a rare event "over there".

Please believe that if terrorism wore the face of Timothy McViegh constantly, I would endorse profiling for short blonde haired white boys.

#1 Helium does not blow up, sooo
#2 Your whole story is a lie.
#3 You criticize Bush for creating a "Oh my god we're all going to die!,"/"The terrorists are out to kill you" attitude in America, Yet you also criticize him for not taking the threat of a Terror Attack seriously before 9/11.
#4 This thread should be closed considering it is just some Liberal's wet dream and now has started a hate thread.
#5 You are the reason for the "In order to be a Liberal you must be Dumb" perception in the world.

#1 I never said the helium was the cause of it. How about you learn to read?

#3 Those are not mutually exclusive, and both are well within my rights as an American citizen.
#4 What hate? lowing and I were having a civil discussion and we never agree on anything. You brought the hate with you

I simply cannot believe that something so coordinated could occur at just the right time ( negligible air defence in the US) in that way, and be run by the backwater militants we call terrorists.  To me it's impossible.  There is no *******  way that Bush, let alone the US could allow something to occur on that scale.  Logic and probability point fingers at rich rich rich weapons and oil creatures, the real terrorists.  Another story though.
North America enjoys the best security in the world from outside attack, only suggesting an inside job.  Nobody outside can touch you and we all know that

whether the story is true or not is not the point though, just consider that it is for the sake of argument.   How many people really cared or even heard of certain attacks, how would you feel if you were a victim of terror?
Do you agree as a civilian, regardless of your ethnicity/religion, you have the right to be left out of the fight?

Spumantii, you say you can't believe that such a well coordinated attack could occur at that point. Well, that is exactly why it happened, none of us ( including those at all levels of local state and federal govts. ) could believe it either. The confusion of that day for those involved and responding must have been staggering.

Easy for us to sit here 5 years later and kick through the rubble, with time to think about what coulda, shoulda, did and didn't happen on that day. I would imagine it was the same for all the other attacks as well.

Major Spittle... There is always a Lack of Reality in his observations and experience, is this not the Case?

My best guess is it was a mylar balloon that flashed over, Needles to say he could have got the power back on and running all by his lonesome since he looks down on the people who cart his ass around the Garden State.

You frequent Newark, that would explain alot of your poor outlook, attitude and general feeling of helplessness and sense of abysmal failure so prevalent in you posts.

Why would you ever go there unless your were looking down from an aircraft?
