HDD not detected, oh noes!1

Well, my old Maxtor 80 gig hard drive was about to die, so I took out out and bought a brand new Seagate 320 gig SATA drive.

I get the drive, plug er all in and nothing, not detecting the drive.

To make a very long story short, here's the deal:

The Seagate 320 gig SATA drive works because I tried it in another machine but it won't work in mine.
Regular Parallel ATA drives work in my computer, because.....welll, I've always used them in it.
My motherboard (ASUS K8V SE Deluxe) does support SATA because it says it does and it has the 2 SATA ports on it.
I updated the BIOS to the very newest edition, so it damn well should be picking up the SATA drive, but it isn't. A local computer tech tried every combination in the BIOS and everything he knew how to get the drive working, but the computer just won't recognize it!

So, here's my question. Did anyone have any similar problems or hear of anything similar to this?

I have a BF2142 beta key and need to play that game quick or I'm going to lose it

erm, not the 1337 SATA knowledge here, but I have a seagate SATA and a ASUS MB too. What chipset is your Mobo (Via? Nvidia? Ati), have you tried the F6 or F10 thingy (on Nvidia Nforce chipsets) while booting? As far as I know you cant activate a new SATA in BIOS as long the chipset driver hasnt loaded. Third party drivers or something?!

I had an ASUS P4P800 - DLX and I had to download Fast Track 378 on my system to install my SATA HD.

I did search it for you...and if it work...I'm expecting a shit load of Karma from you ...LoL

Thought when installing you have to load third party SATA drivers..They usually come on the MB disk. ( Press F6 to install ) via floppy

I had to with mine and it works fine

Well, if it was ensured that the SATA controller is on in the BIOS, it may be possible that the SATA port to which you are connecting is not part of the Southbridge support; possibly using the common Silicon Image chip. So, do you have all of the driver controller drivers installed?

If you do, have you gone into the Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management? The drive may show up there but needs to be activated, a partition added, then formatted.

Next time go to ASUS web site and go to your board support...select IDE or Raid...and look it up...

Thanks for the replies guys, one quick question though.

I am downloading the drivers now LoonykStephane. When I get them, do I just put them on a floppy disc and do the F6/F10 thing when the computer is starting up?

As far as any drivers already on the HD goes, I don't think there's any....

This is the only drive in my computer, so I have no way to start it up and download any drivers or any way of doing what Agent_Dung_Bomb suggested.

Have you formated your disk? 1st. step to install Windows!!! After you´ve installed the whole OS, restart and press F6 or F10 or whatever (look manual). Should work man!

Um...can it be detected and set as an active drive in disk management? Prolly already tried that, but just a thought. ..

Edit-on another computer that is...prolly can't get to disk management on a computer trying to boot to it

Unfortunately, I think that's the only way you'll be able to get it to detect it. New drives are lame like that sometimes. Do you have a buddy with a working computer you could use?

Another possibility is that the mobo is only SATA and not SATA 2. Alot of the newer hdd are mostly found to be SATA 2. Just a thought!!

To your previous question, yes you will want to put the driver on a diskette. When the first blue Windows loading screen loads you will see a message at the bottom to press F6 if you need to install drivers; don't wait too long to hit F6 as this message/option is only available for a few seconds. It won't ask you for the disk at this point. It will continue to do a few other things, then the load process will stop and there will be a message on the screen to insert the disk containing the drivers you want to install. At that point insert the diskette on which you installed the drivers, and follow the screen prompts.

Put Your Windows Disk In The Cd Set Bios To Boot Off Cd.....windows Starts To Boot Up..it Gets To A Stage Where It Says To You Require To Load 3rd Party Drivers....press F6 To Install 3rd Party Drivers...put Your Floppy In....windows Will Then See The Drive And Finish Installing....

Sometimes with Sata drives you have to be careful which SATA socket you plug into, I found on my mobo after I'd built it and was installing, it'd only be detected if I put it on the "SATA 1" position, not "0, 2-4", strange but the way it worked.

LOL...that's like when people call PCI Express PCI-X. There is SATA150 and SATA300, and you are right, they haven't officially defined SATA 2.
