Hi.  I'm needing some help with upgrading a graphics card.  My current one is totally busted.  Currently i have a 128MB DDR Ati Radeon 9800 with DVI output and it is in an AGP slot.  I have a Dell Dimension 8300 is that helps at all.

Could you please recommend a 256MB card that could replace this one (nothing too expensive).  There are also 2 spare PCI card connectors.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The appropriate ATi alternative for an AGP slot, of that same card generation would be an X850XT PE, that was the leading card before the introudction of the new range, won't be as expensieve either.

i have 1.5gb of ram after i upgraded from 512mb.  do the upgrade.  if you must still run agp, its your choice, obviously the 7800 is top of the line for agp, but too much for my blood.  i recently bought a 1600pro (agp)and it does the job.  this christmas ill be ugrading to pcie16.  mainly so i can upgrade my cpu to dual core, but might as well go pcie too.

Absolutely running 1gb would make for a better gaming experience, and anything above that your golden.

You sure you would be able to run that 7800GS on that POS psu from the dell, like 280W lol.

2GB of RAM coupled with your processor will probably be completely lag free, unless you have quite  alot of background programs running, all your settings can be on high, even with low AA with that much RAM, and whats more, with a 7800 or an X850, it'll easily handle BF2142. I personally use and reccomend Corsair RAM.

It has a 250W power supply so could you reconmend a card that would suit?

250W isn't going to cope with anything worth buying, you're probably gonna need a new one of those too.

^^^^ Antec Neo's are crap.  Antec makes some great PSU's but DONT buy a NEO.  My first one was DOA, it's replacement failed at 2 months. IT's replacement was DOA.  Enough said.

Hmmz last I heard, replacing Dell components CAN be tricky. Not sure about the UK, but in Aussie and NZ, Dell
components are proprietary (that is only Dell components will work in Dell machines). This generally means taking your pc back to Dell for replacement parts @ above cost and labour, (as opposed to buying say a Leadtek
card from XYZ Computers, and installing it yourself).

Nah, people started to turn their back on Dell coz they were doing that. Its all pretty much standard these days. They are pretty stingy on expansion slots tho, usually just an AGP and 2 PCIs or 3 PCIes.

Worth checking the power connector for the motherboard tho coz they do still make those in silly shapes for some reason.
