I've been trying to actively participate in a discussion today and it didnt take too long before some people started to call each other fucktards and whatnots.

So I started wondering, why they do so? Picture yourself on a table with some not so well known people, discussing about a serious topic. Would you start to make stupid remarks or call the others on the tabel stupid assholes, if they dont get your point?
What makes people on forums / in the internet so strange? Do they tend to say that, if they run out of arguments? Are they trying to live by their aggressions because they dont have to fear any consequences?

Help me to understand it

this reminds me of a dilbert cartoon i once read. it was something along the lines of how wally (a character in the strip with those unfamiliar) turns into a bully whenever he gets online.

I just think that the anonymity of the internet makes everyone a lot braver and more brash, willing to say some really stupid things, or even how they truly feel, because they face no real-world reprecusions.

fuck you too!

no, no of course not but dont you think that might affect our reactions in the real world at some point (subconciously)? if people get used to curse all the time, it might lower the inhibition threshhold for something like that in the real life as well.

Thats true m8 if have been gaming for a lil while before going out ,i do tend to swear a bit more which winds up my wife something rotten especially after a few bad rounds of getting owned lol.

I will be driveing my car getting all wound up and start shouting "move out the way noob mother fucker" and "ffs you fucking suck"

But yeah i do agree gaming/internet does affect you in real-life sometimes.

Internet anonymity allows people to show their true colors without worrying about the consequences of their actions.  There are virtually no repercussions aside from being banned or whatnot, and they don't have to worry about what friends or family think of their actions; no need to seek out someone's approval when you are online.

Of course, those that are the most belligerent give you a sense of what they are lacking in real life.

Erm, any Australians you catch swearing or name calling are probably just acting as they do around mates. In Australia any enemies you have are defined as...

"A bit of a bastard."

A good friend on the other hand is a...

"Total bastard."

Many people in Aus swear/curse alot. Well, in the NT we do anyway.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
