Could anyone give me any tips? I dont really think my PC is performing as well as it should, is there anything I can do that doesnt involve me taking my PC apart?

Oh, and could someone give me some pointers on taking care of A mic/headphone combo? I just had to replace my last pair, and this pair is going the same way, only a month after replacing, so theres something im doing wrong

Make sure some parts aren't overheating for a start! Also, do a virus scan or.. 6 for spyware - you might think you don't have any, but I wouldn't be surprised if you do - they get it ANYWHERE ;P Also, do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to the PROCESSES tab - see if there are any taking up, say, over 120k - when you are just working normally.

Defrag every 3 weeks or so.
Check your registry files every few weeks.
Un-install programs which arent being used.
Use a safe internet Browser ( i.e opera )
Close remote access.
Dont use too many programs at a time.
Scan your comp for viruses every week.

Those are just some of the things you can do to keep your comp in top form.

Not so much a thing to keep your PC running, but something to do in case it doesn't:

Every month, every week, every day, as often as practical, backup, backup, backup!

this is what i use to keep my pc running smoothly (though some are analytic tools, so you dont ned them): click me. usually i run all of them each friday night before i go to bed. once each week should be enough. also reformat once in a while. i ususally reformat every 3-4 months but that is probabely too much for you. once a year is however an absolute must. also take a look at the windows teak guide (www.tweakguides.com). also free up some hd space. try to not catch too much malware by either using a safer browser Firefox/opera/ie7 (sort of) or only stick to big and trustwothy sites.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I just mova all my files to my second HDD every few months and format/reinstall windows. This fixes any virus/registry/driver problems

I try to keep everything minimal, don't install useless junk. I didn't install my mouse, keyboard, or joystick software, windows is just as good. I try to let Windows do as much as it can, I was reluctant to install motorola phone tools for my cellphone. Turns out the program sucked anyhow. Use the remove program tool to remove any unneeded or suspicious ones you pick up on the web. Try to keep startup folder empty, makes rebooting faster.

Don't use Pc for porn. Fucks it up so fast...

don't click everywhere on the internet like a tard..
for instance, my little +1 on the right is totally spyware-free and will double you performance for the day..

From an Winxp OS standpoint ...

* Spybot is good, but make sure you install thier host file entries (in tools section in Spybot)
* Schedule defrags ...
* Disable System Restore (My Computer-->Properties)
* Disable Error Reporting, same place
* If you have 2 seperate drives, keep swap file on a second drive away form os file.
* Learn to use Sysinternals tools (especially Autoruns,www.sysinternals.com)
* Disable software firewall, use a hardware router

Run a msconfig once in a while. Take out anything u can start manually or just crap u don't need. same thing with windows services.
http://theeldergeek.com/    <---- That site will tell u which services are ok to disable.

Defrag once a week

Virus scan, Spy Scan once a month.... (Once a day if your into prOn)

Anything that says "click here for your free ____" will only give u free spyware. Don't be a tard

Okay, you can also disable some services, here's a link which describes what the service is and what it is recommended you set them to.

http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm

Remember that you do need some of the services!!!!!

p.s if you disable a service and then reboot and your PC doesn't work or is worse, then you can restart the service or in a worst case scenario you can reboot into safe mode and restart the service.

Best bet is to do a trial and error, disable a service, write it down on a piece of paper, then reboot and try out the performance.

Some services are required to run and have Internet etc, others are loaded by XP just in case, even though you might never need them.

But as the people have said:

1. Remove programs you don't use.
2. Scan for SPYWARE
3. Scan for Viruses
4. Run MSCONFIG and stop any programs you don't want to start from loading
5. Clear out you Internet cache
6. If you aren't worried about restore points, turn it off (saves drive space)
7. Clear out temporary files
8. Use a program like REG-CLEAN to keep the registry tidy
9. Disable some of the services you don't use
10. Run a regular defrag (do it every few days when you are going to sleep)(some games like WOW cause a LOT of fragmentation of files)

p.s Remember not to have too many things running all at once, some people have games and browsers and chat programs and picture viewers all running at the same time, keep it to a minimum, and close some down as you don't use them etc.
