Take it out of the domain and put it in the workgroup; the default name is Workgroup, but you may have named it something else when you configured it.

1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Select Properties.
3. Click the Name tab.
4. Click the Change button.
5. Click the Workgroup radio button and put in the name of your workgroup.  If you aren't sure, do steps 1-4 on your computer to see what your workgroup is called...again, if you didn't change it, it will be Workgroup.
6. Click OK to save the settings.  You will have to reboot.

Note:  Unless you have a DHCP source, such as a router, you will also need to manually assign an address to his computer.

Don't take out the domain if this is this guy's work laptop.  Just name your workgroup the exact same name as his domain and you'll be able to network fine between them after you reboot.

If you don't have a router you'll need a crossover cable (unless one of the network cards is crossover aware) to make sure both PC's can talk to each other.  If you have a router that task is done for you, just plug both PCs into it.
