Monitor Specs - what to look for?

I did a search....

I am upgrading my 17" Dell monitor.....

I would like to get at least 19" (more if there is a good reason).

What spec's should I try to hit or exceed? I really have no idea what to look for or what half of the spec's mean (ie. 8ms vs 12ms, and "dot pitch" etc). What should I look for? I have a 7900GT card....so I assume I would make sure the monitor has DVI? Also, I want LCD not CRT.

low response time is prime, but find some monitors and do some reading on what people say about gaming on them. the samsung 204b is nice, but how much do you have to spend?

low response times like 2 or 4 are very expensive. Mines at like 12 or so right now lol.

what is DVI? If i get a 7900, would my screen not work with it? If I knew what DVI is, then I would know if the card would work or not.

IM using thisvery monitor here...Only 2ms....CRT monitors are 0ms, which is of course the best, but for LAN people and power worried people, LCD is better. I took some time and researched this monitor out 270$. but its always about your price range too...

just google DVI, usually Nvidia cards come with DVI converters so you can plug in older (not old) monitors to it.

Just bought a Samsung Syncmaster 930bf. 19", 2ms response, and the thing is worth every penny. Flat out rocks. I've seen the Viewsonic, but for the $299.00 I paid, the Syncmaster flat out rocks.

Something you should know about response times... they are over rated...lol

The human eye blinks between 100-150 ms. How smart is it to quarrle over 12-6 ms ?
Maybe something to think about.

People should note that grey-grey response time is very different to white-black-white. White-black-white is the worst case scenario, and even if you were playing a Grim Fandango based FPS it would be very unlikely.

Looking at cd/m2, contrast and response time is nice, but seeing a monitor in action is another. An LCD could have great stats, but just look like crap. I recommend shoppers to go to computer shops and demand to see things turned on before they buy them. That way you can avoid hassle with dead pixels and bizarre color variations. I'm sorry, but I'm still a CRT man.

midrange LCD, you want a response time below 8 or 10ms. and be absolutely sure the monitor has a DVI connector.

I would check the dell site. they usually have good prices and sales and shit going on. And dead pixels are generally not an issue.

OK - thanks guys.

So - I will check out Dell.

I will check out the Viewsonic VX922, 2 votes for that (good price on new egg).

Still a little confused about the contrast ratio, pixel pitch, brightness (in cd/m2) - I do know I want a good refresh rate (85 is nice).....

Budget is around $300-$350....

With the "wide screen" - is there "dead" area while playing the game? Meaning....will the whole screen be filled with the game during play? Is the image "stretched" to fill the screen (like TV) or does it just give me more view to the sides?

Native res i important .. you want something that gonna look the best at what you plan to run ur desktop and games at ...

Response time. This number is shady because sometime they are all not talking black-->white, sometimes its grey to. At the very least stay under 8ms. The one i got report 3ms Grey-Grey. I had a slight amount of ghosting but the bright crisp picture negated this for me. Nothing (unless you super high on cost) is going to outperform a CRT in terms of speed.

Contract ratio. 1000:1 is great ... but they one i got was 550:1 and i didn't think it was bad. Not sure how to articulate this beyond what the name already implies.

People comment on backlight bleeding .. this is when the room is dark and screen is black you can see some lighter area around the edges... more important to some than others.

Look for reviews of people complaining about dead pixels, some brands more than others, but every monitor is susceptible. I bought to and no dead pixels on either.

Lastly, if you care things like usb ports, swiveling, etc.

I had a nice crt before .. but i wanted something that easier on my eyes, put off less heat, and used less power
