I was doing some tech searching, and I am now stuck between 2 choices.

Currently I have (well, what is important to this thread):

ASUS A8N-E
AMD Athelon 3000+ 64
1 Gigabyte Corsair DDR, PC3200, Dual-Channeled

Now, should I:

Upgrade the processor and ram? I was thinking of 2 Gigs (dual-channeled) of RAM, and a better AMD processor. This is cheaper then what I want as the alternative, and very good, but not good for upgrading as much.

Or should I:

Drop the Motherboard, processor and RAM, buy a new motherboard that is Intel compatable (I think one of the good ones are ASUS M8N-Delux) and buy an Intel Conroe (someone want to help me with a good model, something around $200-$300 Canadian), and buy 2x1Gig of DDR2. This is obviously alot more expensive, but upgradable. I think what I should do, is buy the first one, and when my computer is outdated buy a whole new PC, but I want to leave this question to some more people out there, for broader opinions.

EDIT:

I am patient, so I can wait like half a year for better stuff to come out, price drops, etc on the latter of the options.

Do the latter, but not RIGHT now... The reason because there are currently very few Conroes out for non-OEM Company purchase and if there are, they are wayyyyy overpriced for its original MSRP price tag. Otherwise, after with a bit of time, the latter would be god... sorta... If ya not patient, do the former, you still get good results but not as good what the current intel holds.

you could try to overclock this system while waiting for pricedrops.

what type of ram you have now? maybe its compatable with the new mobo you want
I have Corsair DDR PC3200 2x512 sticks.

I am replacing them with 2x1gig sticks, for the extra gig and the dual-channel.

Would it be faster to have 3gigs of ram or 2gigs that are overclocked?

I'm patient so I can wait for the latter. Anymore comments from anyone?

+1 to both of you.

If you decide to go Conroe, wait till around January.  The current round of price gouging will have abated and the motherboards will have matured.  On the other hand, you could still build a decent AMD rig (sure, not absolute top performing but still very capable).  I'm planning to ditch my FX60 for Conroe in 1st quarter next year.

if your asking if u should upgrade to core d sual core or whatever id think a little more...i have an intel d 3 gig proc 1 gig ram and 7900gt i think i have some problems needing another g of ram but i thought the dual processor would help a bit more...reading around i hearsomething about hyperthreading being better for battle field....dot get me wrong i love my rig

i would go with 3GB.

then you have 1Gb for os, fraps, msn, whatever. 2gb for the game. buy the same speed ram, any faster and it will be dropped in speed.

but, if your buying new ram, 2gb, its better to get a new cpu (intel conroe). i dont know if there are ddr motherboards for conroe, otherwise just buy a ddr2 compatable mobo.

One more suggestion:

ASRock makes a super cheap mother board that supports DDR, DDR2, Pentium D, Conroe, AGP, and PCIe all on the same board. Its only $60 and you could keep your memory and AGP gfx card if thats what you have:

http://www.asrock.com/product/775Dual-VSTA.htm

One word of caution though, I read that the PCIe is only 4x on this board so that may be detrimental if you want to upgrade to a high end PCIe card. I dont know how detrimental though as I dont know how much bandwidth modern cards actually use. I think one of the major tech sites did a test on this recently.
