Well I want to buy some new ram and a graphics card. I have the money and checked that my motherboard can handle it. First I start out with the ram because i have heard that it is easy. How do you put the ram in my computer. I am gonna buy a 2 GB. I know I have to remove the sidesheid and then what. How do I place it and where. Is it really easy. Do I connect it with my motherboard or what.

Is the computer custom built, or is it from Dell, Compaq, etc?

The RAM is vertical in your system.
Find the 2 or 3 skiny sticks and push down the white tabs on each end, it pops out.
Check you have your new ram the right way round and push it in, the tabs will click back into place.

UNPLUG IT FROM THE MAINS FIRST

Not only is this a stupid question to ask, but what I find funny is the fact that he says "Nobody have an answer" less than 20 minutes after his original post.

Is this a stupid question. Not everyone knows there way around computers you retard.
And this is an active forum and then the topic will be posted on the front page.
You mean that you only need to remove the sideshied then find the old ram and remove it by by pushing on some white taps then connect it.

there are slots on your motherboard, usually blue and black/brown. These are the same lengths as your memory sticks you bought.  At each end there are 2 white tabs. Push them down to remove old ram, insert new and then clip them back up.

DONE!! It is that easy.

Graphics card. Depends on whether your board supports PCI-E or AGP. Make sure you get the right card!!

After that open it up again. The AGP/ PCI-E slots are facing the rear of your machine ( where everything plugs in) take out one of the covers and insert card into the slot ( AGP-BROWN, PCI-E BLUE OR WHITE ) either that or remove old card and replace with new. Same priciple as the RAM, the slots have a white clip at the end make sure you unclip and clip it back in when you have inserted card. Put machine back together and switch on.

The only thing left to do is remove old drivers(if a graphics card previously install) and put new drivers on ( On CD that comes with card )  To remove  Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove programmes Select old drivers and remove )

It is important that old drivers are removed as the new one will conflict if it isnt removed.

ABOVE ALL MAKE SURE YOU SWITCH OFF AT MAINS BEFORE OPENING OR DOIND ANYTHING.

simply open your case,(unplugged of course),locate your ram (it should look similar to the 2gb ram u buy maybe w/o heatsinks etc),and remove by pushing the little white levers at each end of the ram slots. Then simply do it all again in reverse with new ram...)
REMEMBER STATIC ELECTRICITY IS YOUR ENEMY,simply try and keep one hand on a metal part of your case to ground yourself........better yet go and get a static strap for your wrist.

Failing that, post the full name of your motherboard and I will find a pic and highlight the areas you need to insert RAM and CARD and post it back.

Well my board is a D848PMB. It is from intel.
Does it matter which kind of ram you put in. Im not talking about 1GB or 2GB but if its pc3500 or higher.
And what if there stands 400mhz or higher what does that mean.

Is there not a thing called memory frequency that has to be supported by the motherboard or what.
Or something with the speed of the ram such as 400 mhz.

Stef10.

First of all your RAM slots are black and there are only 2. Secondly you can only have a AGP Graphics CARD.

Your motherboard will support  DDR 266, DDR 333 and DDR 400.

My recommendation would be 2x  1GB Stick DDR 400 PC3200 184pin, and I would go for a decent make, Corsair, Kingston, or crucial.

Will try and post the motherboard pic if i can

The thing with the DDR 400 is that not the speed of the ram, which means that is totally crap since I have seen 1000mhz.
But is 400 not totally crap.

You board will not support anything higher, if you want higher then you will have to change the board aswell. Thats where it starts getting complicated for someone who has never done it before.

but is 400 bad.

And I have already found a graphics card. its a 6800.

and a 2*1 GB will cost 170£

Whats the speed of your ram.

Tell me will a 2*1 GB ram pc-3200 400mhz for 170£ be good or what.

400 is not bad at all. I have 4GB of 400MHZ RAM in my pc, with a dual core x2 4800+ AMD, 7800GTX 512MB Graphics card, 650watt PSU, 320GB HDD. It runs like shit off a shovel and benchmarking at around 10,000 with no overclocking ( 3DMArk06)

6800 is a good card. If you are upgrading for gaming then go for the Ultra or GT versions( if within your budget) much better gaming cards. Make sure its AGP your board wont support PCI-E

Twin matched 1GB corsair 400mhz £135 for 2GB  www.aria.co.uk

Ebay is even cheaper!!

Take a look at the specs of the ultra and GT aswell. There are differences.

And you only said 6800 before NOT GS. Good make too!

Goodbye :)
+399|6492|Somewhere else

ddr 400 has been the standard/top of the line for some time....its only just now slowly going out of date to dual core processesors . It will be a couple of years before ddr 400 is considered "bad".  The new thing is DDR2 800, but its just started and hasnt bench marked much higher than DDR 400. your box will be decent for a few years maybe. you wont be able to play much past low graphics settings on newer FPS  games but you can still use it.

EDIT: fixed annoying spelling error

They do work together but if one is shit it defeats the object of the other.  Your board will like mine be very shortly out of date and I have checked the specs of your board and it wont support anything higher than that.

For your card and memory expect to pay approx £290 for your card 6800GS (gainward) and 2gb corsair 400mhz.

Your specs, probably 2 -3 years at the most.
