do you have any different set of usb ports like do you have one that fits in a pci slot or a 3.5 " drive bay? if you do take it from the back of your mobo and plug it in there and see if it happens

a mouse shouldnt die after a year :-/

I "only" experience this if I've used the USB port for something else, and THEN changed to the mouse afterwards (I have several mice attached). Normally, restarting windows will solve my problem. Supposedly, there's something in the bus that wont really like the fact that I'm changing devices, but hey.. number of ports are limited, so what can a man do ?

But I'm assuming that you only have the one mouse connected ?
If so, have you tried running anti spy/malware ? I've seen some mal ware that will cause this kind of problem. Also, the same thing can sometimes happen when I play MP3 music. Do you play music while gaming ? Or have you recently upgraded your AV software ? Some AV software will cause problems for some drivers. You may want to look at getting a new driver if the problem started after an AV upgrade... Or you might need to try a different AV provider.

These are the 3 items that I most frequently see interfere with USB operations.

I had this same problem it was my usp port. I just wiggled it around and it doesn't shut off anymore.

I have had mine since day 1 and no problems. Based on what you wrote the answer seems to be your port. Have you tried to use other devices with this port ?
