Hey all, I have a question.

I have 2 512 memory sticks in my computer, Brand:Crucial.
and I want to put 2 more 512 sticks of memory in Brand:Corsair Value Select

So my question is, does it matter if I put 2 different brand memories in my computer?

Sorry, im not very computer smart.

If they are diffent speeds, it will use the slowest of the two. errrrm I think that's right anyways....

Same brand is not required but is recommended.  Same speed is very important (ie all ram will run at the speed of the slowest ram).

Ok im seeing that they have to be the same speed, is there a way to find out?

Really?  I thought it only mattered if they were different MHz.

I`ve never had any problems with mine.

It should say on the side of the RAM itself. 400Mhz or something like that.

Click on "how to identify my ram" in the contents section at the top.

EDIT: Wow.  Just noticed how old that guide was.  Still should do the trick though.....

make sure you install them in same-branded pairs if dual channel is a factor.  And same speed and stuff.

hes getting 2 sticks more. so that would mean 2 sticks of crucial, 2 sticks of corsair. you would still get dual channel. but its best if its the same speed since ram will run on the slowest pair

I realize, just making sure to explicitly point out to use the two brands in their respective pairs if possible rather than just throwing them in any old way if they're the same speed.

Memory race!!! Put them both in a little catapult and see which one hits the ground first. Throw the other one away.

BF2 can run at slower speeds - I use 2 512 266Mhz sticks and 2 128 400Mhz, and it works well, but I can no longer play BF1942 as it needed the higher speed memory.  It is true that you will run at the slower speed of the two but I think as long as its not lower than 266 you'll be ok. Also very important to install them in the proper slots - check your memory setting in the bios to see if your computer is utilizing the dual channel config.   If it is not showing their than they are in the wrong slots.

and yes they are different brands as well.  Adding the two 512's greatly shortened loading times.

I'm using two different types of Corsair memory. The combination of 2x512 of one pair with 2x512 of another pair slows it down a bit, but the increased capacity is such that BF2 performance sees a marked improvement. Alternate brands may be counterproductive, but the only way to know is to try. If it works, then it's better than going out and buying new sticks. But if you're in the market for two sticks, then try to get what you already have. If what you have is outdated, ditch those and just buy 2x1GB.
