No, you can't and shouldn't try to raise a family on minimum wage, but minimum wage does need to be adjusted from time to time to cover inflation.  If prices of everything had remained steady there wouldn't be a need to raise the minimum wage, but everything has increased since the last MW increase.  Like it or not, it has to be done occassionaly.

I also find it rather ironic that the senate and congress raise their pay yearly without so much as a blink, and their pay comes from taxpayers.  You think MW wages hurts the entire economy, look me in the face and say that when our fine government officials do it yearly.

Maybe we should call it, I don't want to do anything to my primary constituancy, and MW earners aren't it, bill.

the mw workforce vastly outnumbers the severeal hundred congressman and senators, and I don't like them doing that either, yes I know it needs to be adjusted once in a while for inflation, but an increase of around 40% is ridiculous, especially since it's just for high schoolers to have a little bit of extra spending money, it's not the fact that the employees are earning............scratch that......getting paid more, it's that the employers are having to shell out more, and in order to cover the cost the prices will immediately increase, say good bye to your 99 cent menus

Over here its $NZ9.50/hr which converts to about $US5.90, though most people earn a bit more than that; most unskilled jobs are $NZ11-13/hr ($US6.82-8.06).  Theres currently a push to get the minimum wage up to $NZ12/hr ($US7.44), though that'll take a while.  If you're 16 or 17 the minimum wage is 80% of figures listed.  A typical flatting/apartment situation (rent a room, share utilities & maybe food) should cost $NZ150-200/wk.

actually, they (illegal immigrants) make upwards of $10 and hour, but since the hippies have started this "we can't function without illegals that don't pay taxes" bullshit, when the contractors pull up to the migrant workers and say "i need 5 men for 12 and hour, they've been refusing saying that they are more valuable than that and won't work for less than 15, to which most contractors have been driving off to find the high scholl kids

Was it Kr@cker who said that is only for those new to market?
If so, I agree with him.  Because starting my Junior year of High School this year, many of my friends got jobs over the summer and all of them started at minimum wage.

If politicians could remove their agenda and vote like the people they represent want them to vote, our government would be a lot better.  But that will never happen.

And it's not like your average 2-5% increase, they hook themselves up.

Minimum wage is crap, but I understan dit needs to be adjusted for cost of living. however, you can't make enough from 1 minimum wage job to get by. Just can't happen.

I know when i was working with tiles and brick around my house I scooped a few mexicans from home depot but shit man i didn't pay them 5.15 an hour more like 10.50, maybe construction job and all but still... I would feel weird paying a person 5.15. You can't survive on wage like that.

All of you people saying you can't survive on minimum wage need to take something into account, location.  There are still places in this country where you can rent an apartment for $300 a month, or even less.  I know because I've done it.  I was living off of $750 a month for over a year, still had plenty of money for a good internet connection, food, and the occasional road trip.  I admit if I'd had to drive more often it would have been hard, but my commute was only a mile, and I'd often ride a bicycle.  And even if I was driving every day I still usually only had to fill up the tank about every two months.

Just something to keep in mind.

Example.

A healthy single American.

40 hours @ 5:15 an hour; $206 a week ; $824 a month pre-tax.

Necessities to survive:

Food
Rent

Well shit.....I guess thats the bare necessity.....nevermind

Minimum wage in oregon is around 7.15.  But we dont pay sales tax. Everything is as priced.  But we also have a massive state tax taken out of our paychecks so its worse in the end.  We get people coming down from Washington all the time buying cars so they dont have to pay sales tax.

To agree with the other dude who said it, Wal-Mart and other corporations hurt "small business" more than any minimum wage increase ever will.

It may seem like Americans are getting duped by a much lower minimum wage.. but if you consider what the cost of living is over here.. it really isn't much higher.

holy shit!! you have age brackets for MW? if your that old and not in uni you are a detriment to society if you are still relying on minimum wage and/or only working one job, minimum wage is your boss's way of telling you that you suck so hard he would pay you less if he could.

In Norway unskilled labour (resturant , fastfood , stores etc ) starts at 10 USD an hour.
But thats if you are 18 or more , if u are under 18 i think minimum is about 6 USD.

Pretty nice deal if u ask me...
