I think it can act as a trigger to unleash mental problems which may be recessed or dormant. I have known quite a few people who have ended up needing psychiatric treatment from episodes triggered while smoking, and some people who know they have problems persist in smoking despite these episodes. It's very inadvisable to take any drugs or even drink when you suffer from mental illness, and many forms of intoxication can cause the disorientation and loss of control which leads people harming themselves or those around them. Like you say, I think different people can be okay with one and not the other, it may even be linked to certain propensities in their family genes. my Dad is having serious mental problems because of it so for me alcohol, but only beer! Wine with a meal is great, spirits for only when I'm around as I let them. If you let them get compeletly drunk on spirits when you're there then it SERIOUSLY puts them off doing it all the time as they get bored of it.

Marijuana of course, I did both growing up but I was always in the most danger being driven around with drunk friends at the wheel.
You just don't want them smoking it when they have to study, preferably when they get out of school but we know that isn't going to happen.
I've had 10 friends die of drunk driving, none have died yet from smoking weed, it actually {THC} kills cells before they can become cancerous.

If I catch my kids smoking fags they know they will eat the contents of the ashtray after they have smoked a 20 pk without any breaks, if that dosen't put them off I have no chance of stopping them. If you say to a kid nowadays, your grounded, they tend to climb down the drainpipe to get out. So Ive come to learn its often better to give them the choice and then they trust you and the whole scenario works out better in the long run.
Weed isn't completely safe. That said, its a lot better than alcohol, so I'd have them smoke marijuana. I've smoked a fair bit and drunk a fair bit, so I feel somewhat qualified to have this opinion. Not smoking at the moment though.
We've recently had the meth thing going on too, though over here people call it P. Overall crime is down but violent crime is WAY up, at a time when heaps of people are using meth...go figure... I love a joint, or the odd trip but meth just fucks people up, that stuff seriously wastes lives...
And people, once you get a few seeds you can have an unlimited supply of weed, so no need to steal or whatever...

I'd like all gov't resources (DEA) to be aimed at detroying the meth epidemic. Pot is the least of our worries.

Again, some of you seem to think there are dangers associated with marijuana. Clean marijuana cannot kill. Unless it is mixed with other substances the only danger lies in the possibility of impaired judgement when high. From all I've ever seen thats not a huge threat considering many people do less when high.
Some people who are very drunk are often violent and do stupid things. People who are very stoned never get in to fights and couldn't be arsed doing anything really. Alcohol has a much worse affect on people and society but its all good in my opinion!
