Okay. My parents don't like the long blue ethernet cable going through major parts of the house. They bought me a Wireless G card. My brother already bought the wireless roughter.
I suggest the Linksys line of equipment. A wireless router AND card is necessary. Make sure you buy the same set of routers/card. They are labeled with numbers (ie G, E). I use the "G" line of things.
First of all, install the router on the computer that we will call the "Mother" computer. I suggest making this the family's computer, not your's in your room or whatever.
Then, install the wireless card on the other computer(s). I suggest using the extension cable (usually USB) that comes with the Card (most of the time, but you can buy an extention) Use the Linksys Moniter, not that windows zero configuration crap. Turn on the Linksys Moniter.
When i say tweak, move slightly, like barely touch it to move it.
Stack your battlefield and other computer game boxes up high. My Card is raised almoste double the tower height (from the desk). Place the card on the stack, with an eraser on the back end of the card. The part that connects to the cable is the back end. This is to aim it down, towards the router that will be positioned later. Aim the Card near the wireless router. Slight movements to optimize are not necessary now.
Although the Windows Configuration is up, the Linksys Moniter should be on. Open the Windows one, and there should be a number to the right of speed "Speed:________________here" above the signal bars. Try to the Speed and Signal to be as high as possible withought extreme "tweaks." After it's fairly good, then its time to adjust the router antenae.
Raise the Router to about the height of the mother's tower. Mine is on the tower itself, which is fine. Turn the Router around, having the Antanae on the side closest to the Card. Now, you need to adjust the antenae. After each adjust, go to the other computer and look at the signal strength and speed on the Windows utility. Do large changes to find a relatively good spot for the antanae. Then decrease movement size for the antenae until the signal strength on the other computer is optimal.
After that, Tweak each the Card and the Router antenae till your connection is optimal. In the Linksys Moniter, look for a percentage. That percentage is your signal strength. You want that to be as high as possible. Good luck!
If you are not using a Linksys system, Use the Connection moniter that comes with the card. still try to maximize connection via the Windows zero configuration thing.
Afterwards, when your connection is great, download the latest drivers for your card/router.
If you're stuck pm me. Or, you can right your message in the Reason for giving karma box :-)
