Providing you had no choice and if you took the "legalities" out of the question would you rather your children have a weekend partying with marijuana or booze. I suppose the question could be viewed as which do you believe to be least dangerous.

You are correct. Long term effects are not meant. I think most kids experiment and of course hopefully neither would be long term. But let's just say your 22 year old son went away on spring break. You knew they were going to be doing one or the other.. which one ?

The drinking age is most US states is 21, so regardless of your preferences your 22 year old is above drinking age and you really can't stop him/her from drinking themsleves stupid.

But in the spirit of the question, what would be my preference if legallity and long term effects aren't an issue? Well, you took away the only two major problems between the two choices, so I choose Marijuana. Because I don't want to clean up after the kid who pukes all over my house from over-drinking.

I would rather my boy smokes Marijuana. I have been a user of both for 15 years now. I have done some crazy shit when boozed up, stuff I ain't proud off. I have never been in a fight that didn't involve drink on one or both sides. I once seen a top medical consultant asked the same question on TV and he also said Marijuana.
Marijuana can be mentally addictive but a Strong minded person should be able to control it, with alittle discipline.
Booze is physically addictive which can't be controlled.

I shall be doing it the same way with my kids as my parents did to me. "ok you want to drink? well drink in the house not out on the streets" which I did starting 15. I have only every thrown up on booze once because I know how to limit myself. I think I learned this by drinking under my parents watchful eye instead of drinking bottles of vodka in one go while being egged on by your m8's behind a bus shelter somewhere. My point is that kids will try both vices its better for the parents to be the regulators giving advise than your m8 Johnny who just wants to see you rolling around in your own sick for a laugh.

If it is a continuously: neither; if that's not a choice, as much as it hurts to say, since i despise the stuff, pot.

I have known alcoholics and stoners, hell i was an alcoholic(or is it: i am one, just dry??). I have seen both substances destroy lives. So, i'd prefer neither. Pot by itself can be rather harmless, provided it's straight weed, not mixed w/ other shit(dust, blow, crack, etc.). Unfortunately, it can lead to other drugs.
