A friend of mine is selling me an Area 51m Notebook Computer (I know is not a new generation Alienware computer), but he's selling it cheap. I've got my doubts if is good enough to play BF2, though. I mean with the SF expansion and all; so, with this specs, what do you think about it?

Intel P4, 3 Ghz
1 GB DDR (I dunno the Clock speed)
60 GB HD (I think HD is 4500 rpm, but not sure)
ATI Radeon  300X 128 MB Videocard (this is what it worries me the most)
CD/DVD RW 8X Combo
15" 1280 X 768 Screen

For your opinions thx in advance!

Looks fine as a generic laptop but if gaming is your main goal you will probably be dissapointed.

Yea I bet that alienware would have costed him 3000$ XD!!

It would only cost like 400$ to make that as a desktop. Probably even less

It wouldnt run BF2 at high or probably medium, rather low end...

Alienware is paying extra for looks. Look around a little more and you'll definitely find a better deal.

How cheap? I'd wouldn't pay much for that.

Yeah, I need it for gaming coz I'll be travelling around for about two months soon so I thought it was a good opportunity to keep on playing while on the road, but I can't spend too much, though. I guess I'll have to go for the Area-51 m5550, (check the product features), at less it's last generation.

Intel Core DuoT2300 Processor
Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition
512MB DDR2 at 667MHz
60GB 5400RPM
128MB ATI MobilityRadeon X1400
24x10x24 CD-RW /8X DVD Combo
15.4" WideXGA 1280 x 768

What do you think about this one? It's $ 1, 099. 00 USD

ok, please no alienwares. unbelieveably overpriced. also, your friend has to know, no matter how expensive of a laptop he gets, there is no chance in hell hes gona play with acceptable framerates at more then meduim/low. also, its gona get REALLY hot and its gona suck out the battery like its going out of style. if he MUST get a laptop, dont have high expectations JUST because its an alienware.

edit: sorry i thought you were asking about your friend. replace the "he/him" with "you"  =P

Ok, I need a notebook to play while travelling, so if no Alienwares coz they're unbelievable overprized (I don't think 1, 000 bucks are that much and I'm not rich either), what's a cheaper and better choice? Do you know a different and manufacturer? I'd really like to have some other deal. Thx for the advice!

Gaming on a laptop is predetermined failure. The heat will corrupt your data and fry your components, shortening their lifetime.

My gaming computer is a HP zd8000 series laptop.

P4 HT 2.8ghz
1.25 gb dual channel ram
256 mb ati radeion x600 (128 dedicated, 128 shared)
17" brightview widescreen

Another guy at work has pretty much the same thing, and several others have HPs with 15.4" widescreens and athlon 64s with only 128 mb video ram.  We can all play with 1024x768 and most settings on medium/low.

But that alienware isn't all that great, depending on the price.  If you need something for only a couple of hundred, go for it.  otherwise you're looking at shelling out $1,500 US plus for something that you can play BF2SF on

Have you thought of building your own?  Get a laptop shell and add the compenents of your choice.  I'm at work at the moment but at home I've got the previous issue of Custom PC magazine (a british mag, on getting the best out of pc's).  When I get home I'll post the low-down but from what I remember, they had a cheap laptop for £499 (approx $900 by exchange rates, probably a lot less as you get components cheaper) and a gaming laptop for £799.
