My wife has finally agreed to let me get a new computer!

My suggested specs are (these are my own thoughts):

Asus M2N32 SLI Deluxe $315
AM2 4600+ $358
Gigabyte 7900GT $435
2G Corsair 5300 $228
Maxtor Sata II 300g $139
Windows Home $119
Pioneer 111D DVD Burner $53
Liteon DVD Rom $35
Antec Sonata II $179
Installation $70
1931

I have a budget of around $2,000 (All in Australian Dollars)

I am buying from www.msy.com.au, so please look at their product list - http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf for likely alternatives.

My thoughts are:-

1. Should I go a 7600gt (save a bit) due to the Divx10 coming out with vista soon and then upgrade to a premium card?

2. Magazine said a Sonata II case with included psu will run a 7900gt. Computer guy suggested a Coolermaster Stacker with a seperate PSU i.e. Antec NeoHe??? Cooler Master looks fugly!

3. Read an article that the Conroe 6400 o/clocked performs better than the 4600+, then if I overclock the 4600+ then that would be better??? U never win.....anyway was thinking conroe only E6600 though.....but very bad stock levels and looking at acquiring in the next three weeks or so. Theory is AM2 new socket set....amd must beat conroe in time....upgrade from 4600+ at some latter date....

4. Is the top of the range m/board worth the money with the 590 chipset??? I may never sli so would a cheaper board on their list be just as good? I don't want my m/board to be a limiting factor in future performance.

Any help appreciated!!!!! *bouncing up and down in anticipation of BF2 on maxed settings......drooooollll*

Sounds like a pretty good PC.

Quite similar to mine.

The ASUS A8N32 SLI deluxe is a very good board. I have an AMD x2 4800+ and XFX Nvidia 7800GTX 512MB PCI-E graphics card and 4GB RAM. DVD RW, DVD ROM, 650W PSU, 120GB IDE MAXTOR and a 200GB SATA Maxtor, running XP Pro.

Runs battlefield and any other game on 1028x 768 @ 75HZ with everything maxed out.  You could not ask for much more than you have got on your list. Performance wise you should not get any problems with this PC and should also cover you for the imminent release of 2142 !!

At todays conversion rate thats just over £820 GBP which is a VERY good price. I paid around the same but used eBay and built it myself.

Good luck and see you on the battlefield with your new hardware.

Drop Windows XP Home and go for Windows XP Pro. Use a BFG Tech 7900GT rather than a Gigabyte. Don't change your mind and get a 7950 or a 7x00GTX this close to the G80 release, as you might want to upgrade next year.

Might as well go all the way on the RAM if you can:

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail (CAS 3-4-3-9)

or...

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4 - Retail   (CAS 4-4-4-12)

If you can, of course.

I still don't see why this guy wants to get an AMD instead of a C2D (Core 2 Duo).

(I mean, come on, betting on false hopes and baseless chance is the most foolish thing to do -- best to stick with what is proven in the present [Conroe].)

If you wont use SLI then don't pay for it.

Stick with AMD they run a heck of a lot cooler. And what's the exchange rate for you there because tigerdirect.com lists all of those things at cheaper prices then what you posted.

Ccheck your memory compatibility with the m2n32 board, it's been causing people a lot of headaches. The corsair c3 to c5 seem to be alright but other mems installed wont let the system boot without a bios update.

Check your PSU compatability on the nvidia site for that 7900 vid card. It uses a lot of juice. They have a chart listing all the PSU's tested with it under their support area.

It's only been available for a few days now.  Most of the retail sites have not yet updated their webpages for Core 2 Duo (not to be confused with Core Duo which is completely different).
