Anybody else notice that Cougar started this thread and then just disappeared? Just yankin' our chains Cougar?
Eh.....it's still been an interesting discussion I suppose.

K, if you're looking for brand preferences, here's what I suggest. I've had nothing but luck with these, and I've custom built a lot (50+) of high performance gaming and video editing machines.
That's my 2 cents.
- Processor: for gaming, I live by AMD. Get a middle of the line dual core like the x2 4600+
- Motherboard: Anything by Asus with an nVidia chipset. If you want SLI, that is. If you want ATI, get one that can do crossfire.
- Video Card: I think that both chipset manufacturer's make great chips. ATI and nVidia are both great companies. If you're getting a 3rd party manufactured card, I like MSI, BFG, and Chaintech.
- Case: I love both Lian Li and Antec. If you can afford it, get one with the power supply on bottom with a baffle to keep its heat out of the case.
- Power Supply: Enermax, with the cable management option.
- Sound Card: I can't justify the jump to an X-Fi from the Audigy 2 Pro. That's just me, if a client requests it, I'll do it.
- Drives: I live for Plextor. Espescially the slot loading one. It's worth the premium in lack-of-coasters alone.
- HD's: WigiDigi's in 10K, Hitachi for mass storage.
- RAM: I LOVE OCZ's platnium line. Dual Channel for the win.
That's my 2 cents.
I voted porn, dont listen to me

I built a (Not for me)
Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego)
Asus A8N-Sli SE Motherboard
BFG 7600GT (OC)
1GB Corsair XMS CL2
New Antec Case + Antec PSU (it's really quite nice for so cheap)
250GB Samsung Spinpoint SATA2 HDD
Pioneer DVD RW
for £450
If I were getting a system myself, I'd go with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, not the Extreme but one of 'em.
I've been an AMD fan since the K7 (Athlon) came out, but now Intel have got them on the ropes.
AM2 is rubbish.
But you can pick up some of the old 939 Chips very cheap at the moment.
Asus do a lot of nice reliable quick motherboards, Seasonic without a doubt do the best PSUs, Plextor for optical storage if you're lazy and don't want to shop around lots and read lots of reviews ('cos Plextor drives are always great, but you can usually find something as good or better for cheaper if you shop around), XFX do lovely. Don't bother with Raptors - not worth the money.
