Well you should not have worked that out, DICE/EA will never implement it. Instead, you should have eaten a cookie or something.

k30, play warlord. I'm serious. Ask in the team chat if anyone wants to help take the palace. Invite those guys to your squad, hop in a buggy, pick up those that are around, ask the rest to spawn on you, and make for the palace. It's like karkand's hotel but then placed at the back of the map. People like to go capture it and it actually is important. Oh, no tanks or arty either. yay.

City maps are about personal gain and laying in wait for huge gunfights and fun.

When you dont need to move from 1 or 2 positions, thats why they stay there.

I for one will NEVER sneak round to the back base to cap it, for what? a lousy +2 cap assist.

I am there to kill people not win.

Higher rankers usually have more experience and know where the action will be, thats why I always stay at the surveilence post in sharqi, as its next to 4 of the main flags, yet I will never go to the tv station.

I stay where the action is.

Sure on larger maps I stay with a squad (if good) and take flags, as there arent any main hotspots, and have to go find the battles.

But thats what its about, and the lower ranking people follow you because they dont know how the map works and follows someone who knows what to do.

Once they realise they keep wasting 20 minutes taking flags, when they could be sitting on a roof shooting people they will stop following you.

Face it, win or lose it doesnt matter.

Lose 0 - 300 with no flags, doesnt matter as long as you got a good kdr and owned a bunch of people.

Karkand is a squad-destroyer, players who cooperate well on one map will be sucked into the meat grinder when Karkand has loaded and if the SL tries to set a different order they'll leave at once.

Probably some players get somewhat bitter and cynical when they've been playing for a long time.

Once I found an SL who warned members to follow orders and then kicked them if they didn't. He gave ppl second chances but the moment they failed him he kicked them again. Needless to say it was one of the best sessions I've ever had. It's not nice to kick ppl but if you explain to them why I think they can take it. I wish SLs would do that more.

My best rounds on BF2 (can count on one hand) have all been either when we have a complete squad, all doing exactly what a squad should do, or just when its a really good fight), you know the fights which you can't really describe, when there are no tanks, and whenever tanks do come, they get AA'd to hell and beyond.

Those are the times when I think "I love BF2", but a lot of the other times, I found playing it lethargic.

If anybody knows of a great clan that only deals in teamwork, I'll be interested, I tried starting my own one, and have just one member willing to work as a team.

If there's one thing I've experienced in my many hours of play... it's that it's way more easy to get a decent score if you are winning as a team. It's particularly good for your k/d, you should try it.
Being on the losing side delivers you a bad k/d most of the times.
Teamwork = good k/d, easy. You're making it harder for yourself if you stay at the action zones being wiped out of combat due to artillery/tanks/GRENADES AND CLAYMORES/an overwhelming mass of enemies.

I guess I'm one of the exceptions {based on rank and that I enjoy team play - see stats} to the consensus that people tend to point-whore more as they move up in rank.  I realized a long time ago that this is the way the game is designed if you want to rank-up.

However, I found a few ways to get higher points and still be part of a team:  1) Join a clan or play on a clan server,  2) Play on a UK server - theses guys play well as a team,  3} Play in smaller maps {Warlord, Sharqi, etc.} and you'll notice people teaming-up more,  4} Lead a small squad and just focus on the flags that the point whores don't go to,   5) Join the Dark Side Luke

Yes you can rack up points as a idiot. Spawn camp and do all the things you want to increase your all important score!!!!!

But I find the best way to play the game is be in a squad. It's fun and the sense of fun with a few mates after work, all in the same room shouting to each other is great. Plus a few distinct advantages;

Capping a flag with a whole squad takes seconds.

You're K/D ratio is going to be better because a medic or two in the team can save you after a quick fire fight.

Get jumped by a few soldiers in a squad and you can put them down. (Get jumped by 3 or more on your own, and you're screwed).

You can take along enough classes to handle a variety of situations.

You don't have to spawn miles away from the action and trudge your ass back to it.

You can own entire sections of the map! Take Karkand as the example given above. Myself and a bunch of squaddies have crossed the river and grabbed all four bases, while everyone else is ignoring their commander. "Errr lads pincer movement anyone"? I'm sure everyone here has done the same.

Yeah points, woooo. Great, but more enjoyment is to be had from working as a team, and feeling like your squad won the war.

I would think the points freaks are the same ones that would play the latest MMORPG just to level. Story? No thanks. Interaction with other players? Errrr. Smash mobs for meaningless level gains to look superior? Yes Please!!

Point badly made. But I guess you get it.

Good thread.

The thing I find odd is that gameplayers... competitive, largely male group that we are... tend to care more about 'personal glory' than about winning; which I would have expected to be as important at least. I thought maybe it was to do with the WCR no longer requiring the ridiculous 3:1 it used to, but it's not that as things haven't changed (that I've noticed) since the change and from that thread where I asked about it it seems like a lot of people simply don't care about their WLR.

People mostly play for points for the unlocks, with badges and other eBling alongside this to boost their egos (not meant in a bad way, I'm quite proud of a few of mine and some awards require a lot of skill and dedication) so points are important. Once you've passed the last unlock point then really you have to play the game mostly for fun, since the badges, ribbons and medals don't give you anything you can actually use in a material way; with the exception of higher rank if one tries to get into the commander spot.

Maybe we need more of an insentive to play in a squad?! Such as higher points for a flag cap or asset destruction, or if you spend a certain % of the round in a squad then you get a bonus or something, I'm not sure but I know there needs to be more of a insentive to do it.
I was thinking about that again just last night, while capping a flag solo on Sharqi. I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if I got some kind of bonus for doing this alone? Doh, what am I saying! That would encourage people to go lone wolf... so the reverse, definitely.

kingcoyote wrote:

Since the consensus seems to be that

1) people don't work as a team simply so that they can point whore
2) we want to have good teamwork in order to win and to have more fun...
Some great thoughts there, good one.

kingcoyote wrote:

Why not give everyone on the winning team a 10% point bonus in the same way that the winning commander gets a 100% point bonus?  Its a small but noticeable boost that could potentially encourage the point whores to work as a team and reward those that already are.
I thought of something along those lines recently but I think it would have a dark side, like most award procedures/requirements... the dreaded padding. Good idea in principle as I think measures to encourage teamwork would be, the game as it stands is probably a good compromise.

kingcoyote wrote:

Another posibility is to give squad based bonuses instead of team based.
That's a better idea I think, particularly if it factors in things like flag caps and defends.

kingcoyote wrote:

Others have mentioned this but the metrics for it have never been well defined.  Basing it on just the total score of the squad doesnt work because the points say nothing about the teamwork of the squad.
Distance from the squad leader during certain actions could be used as one yardstick, as long as the range were not ridiculously short where they'd be a grenade opportunity or something like that.

kingcoyote wrote:

Basing it on teampoints is better but still not completely accurate because we all know its easy to abuse that.  So, perhaps a bonus could be applied to the squad with the most total flag points (defends, captures, assists of both).  This is still not perfect, but I do believe it is closer to the goal.
That sounds pretty good.

kingcoyote wrote:

To take it further you could assign different values to different flags on the map.
I think that would be a bad idea. Flag have their inherent tactical value, to assign an additional point system to highlight this would probably lead to the same kind of blinkered focus as at Hotel on Karkand. Might work, but my gut tells me it would have more of a downside than an upside. I do think that there should be more points for flag defends, particularly if it's done as a squad (again, distance from squad leader giving an indication of squad cohesiveness).

it is sad that people play for points only.....why?  are you going to get a gold star from the teacher if you make general?  bragging rights?  Is it that important?

I have so little time to actualy play - I couldn't care less about points....I would rather be one of the few that gets 1-2 hours of satisfaction out of being in a good squad with a good squad leader chugging around a map and owning....that is more fun to me than simply trying to get "points" in any way possible....

When I was Pvt I'd follow high ranked players in the hope they'd protect me and help me out. I still do just not as reliant. I too have noticed that sometimes I have a few Pvt's and LCpl's following me, just a way to get help I rekon.

the game is only fun and interesting when you first play, then slowly you get hooked on the point and stats system and you do whatever you can to get them.  i do it too, and i wish i would stop...i actually think bf2 would be ALOT funner w/o the stats/ranking/awards system imo....
I will play with people i know and normally play with, and we create 1 to 2 squads.  You know what happens? We pwn everything while capping bases and stuff.  So,  what im saying is, try to invite people your familiar with that you know will do their jobs.

I still find BF2 fun, only on specific servers though. I really enjoy getting everyone in the small alleyway near the hotel for a huge firefight. And I have another account for crazy fights like if I feeel like seeing how many tanks I can take out with C4 in a round or something.

Yeah what u said, the low ranks following you, thats so cool,
I happened to me once, running around getting flags, and this corperal kept following me everywhere, helping me get flags, and doing his best to kill people, even though he mostly died, but then I revived him and he proceeded to following me again, nothing feels more good then people actually following ur orders or helping you

the best thing ever is having a full squad of high ranked OR experienced GOOD players that can cap bases while kicking ass.  i do that on wake a lot as the USMC and mostly our whole squad will get in the top 10 players for the map and we'll still win at the same time, it owns....

To get a whole squad to work togeter is almost impossable. Heck I can barly find a gunner that works well. Gunner / pilot combo is all about team work.

depends on the players not the ranks..

for instance today, myself (colonel), (2 star general) buc nasty, (3 star general) sev and 1 other officer and a few sergants worked together for about 6 rounds destroying the other team. sticking togethor as a squad. Resupplying, medicing, capping flags. it really depends on if the guys you play with care about points or winning, do they use voip, ect.

I'm usually a squad leader because i try not to die... Thats my goal.. be a good spawn point for my squad and not die.. I dont go for points, i play to win and help my squad..

First of all why wouldnt u care about winning? Second of all who cares about points. I dont point whore i do whats necessary for me and my team if that means capping a flag ok ill do it. What im after is winning and havin more kills than deaths at the end. Anyone who is just in it for their greedy selfs are the noobs. Notice my rank and i still say this. Ive seen 3 star and 4 star generals play and totally suck ass until they get a vehicle once again they sit in the mainbase for hours waiting for a jet or helo or armor im thinkin sad use a gun once in a while. I grab vehicles but id prefer going by foot. My fav vehicle is the jet now that im pretty good in it. Dont call people who care about winning a noob though. Cause i care bout having fun and winning and doing good k/d wise.

How sad someone has to be to waste 1500 hrs of their life throwin grenades at Karkand just to get points...

Personally I think the fun in this game is through teamwork and good communication. Nuthin better than to be in an F-15 and smoke a tank that your squad mates just called in... and then hear "Thanks!".. its a great feelin.
