So this year I'm going to university and it just so happens that i need a laptop . haha so i was just wondering what you folks would recommend i have about 1500 to spend on it and also is there any chance that i can play bf2 on a laptop?
1500 what? Pounds, US$....?
I recommend an Asus. You will get a lot notebook for your money. If you can play BF2 on it, depends what you can spend, what leads us back to the question of currency...

I don't know what are the prices for Asus Notebooks in Canada, but for 1500 $ you should be able to get a nice one. If you would like to play games on it, be sure that the GPU doesn't use shared memory. ATI makes excellent Mobile GPU with seperated memory up to 256MB and most of the Asus Notebooks have ATI GPU's.|Vap0rXX| wrote:

Toshiba, Dell are my first pick. Stay away from "integrated" graphic cards. Sager is not a bad choice, but make sure you read about their support. And for those who may suggest Alienware, Sager use the same hardware, they only have a different wrapping for less money.
Find a lappy that has a video card with at least 256M of dedicated memory.
What I have:
Dell XPS M170 (with 7800GTX go)
www.notebookforum.com => Will give you a ton of INFO and reviews.

And yes it plays battlefield 2 just fine - Also I can play BF2 from anywhere in my house or garden, as the WIFI works peachy.

I think you need a video card with separate memory, off course. I also think You need about 1.5 GB off memory and most laptops don’t carry that much. My HP zd8200 didn’t. So you need to buy some extra memory. For that you need a free memory slot, my HP zd8200 didn’t. So I had to ditch 500MB to replace it with 1GB. Which seems a waste to my.
So try looking for a laptop with a free memory slot.

For the record Clevo manufactures for many large name laptop providers, Sager, Alienware, Pro-star, and at one point Dell too, (think they might do a part of the dell line still) I personally have a pro-star it has been great for the last 3 years and still kicks ass as a dedicated server for LAN parties.Buzerk1 wrote:

Back on topic, what is your primary use school or gaming or both? if just fro school you want light and durable power is a minor consideration so look at centrino or core solo based produces, for better battery life if you are allowed to use them in class. If you want a pure gamer that stays in the dorm room look at the "desktop replacement class" these have larger screens weigh upwards of 11 pounds and have shorter battery life, but they have the options for larger ram, multiple hard drives, TV tuners and 17" + screens.
if you are trying for both you are going to have to find the unit that balances both.
I have owned many brands of laptops throughout the years and have had good luck with Pro-star, (just get the 3 year warranty), Dell, HP/Compaq. What it comes down to is wherever you buy make sure you feel comfortable with their customer service and warranty, the victory of a good price is quickly soured buy bad customer service.
Thanks for all the help, I've basically narrowed it down to a Dell due to the customiztaion factor as well as the wide range of laptops
Just a few more question,
1) dedicated memory or integrated memory?
2. processor: duo core or solo core
3) amount of ram recommended, im mostly likely getting 1 gb but opinions are welcome
Thanks again

As for video cards i have 3 choices
1. 128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300 HyperMemory™- +$0
2. 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™- +$50
3. 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™Go 7300 TurboCache - +$120
which is the best "bang for your buck" kinda thing and with that one what setting will i be able to run bf2 at?
As well im worried about living in residence and then internet being insufficent to run bf2 is this a problem and if so what can be done to help? the wireless card in the laptop im getting is Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps) just wondering if its sufficent and of course my res room has a ground connection

has anyone installed bf2 on a macbook pro running win xp? i've been thinking about buying one for a while now, but i'd like to know if anyone has any experience with bf2 on a macbook.
IMO laptops arent for gaming.
Laptops : School, work, Hacking
Desktops : Graphical, Gaming, Media Center, ect.
But thats just me.
I really wanna see 1 of those new Dellienware SLi books melt in someones lap.
Heat is a laptops WORST enemy. So why would u try to over work it? There is lil to NO space for heat spead or release. Have you even taken a laptop apart? Components are so close, that they could EASILY damage each other from heat.

Which model are looking at Dell? The Inspiron 9400??
The Intel PRO is ok. I have the 2915 and it's working fine.
As for the video cards, I know the Nvidia 6800 GTX go is playing BF2 without any problem, but I don't know where the 7300 is.
