Do you know anything about the M-16 or the AK-47 as for hitting targets.
AK-47 is a good weapon, the problem is our enemy shoots from the hip, aims it around, or over walls, and basically jjust grips and rips, they are not the best trained marksman.  We on the other hand have the M16A2 and yes I think it is a good weapon, We qualify on targets up to 300 meters away, and are accurate at that range, can't speak for ak.
I don't know a single assault rifle that is accurate when firing from the hip. Only Rambo and Arnold can probably do that AK is effective in short bursts from 3-5 rounds. Also it is very effective in semi-auto mode. I presume that the main difference between m-16 and ak47 is in round and power of the round. Clearly, .223 is not as deadly as 7.62 which can be VERY nasty due to the spins it receives. .223 is more accurate, less recoils means longer accurate bursts and more likely to fataly wound or disable enemy. every time you wound an enemy - it is greater trouble for the squad than if that person is shot dead. those who fought in wars know that well. however, ak's are also made in smaller calibers - such as 5.45, which is evern smaller caliber than .223 (5.65), that is AK74 the same round is used AKSU.

Bhoy though the AK can take a beating and keep on ticking. The higher cylic rate assualt's such as lower calibre H&K's (MP5pdw - the '10, but not the UMP-40) can put a decent shot group from the standoff/hip firin posistion's.

I served the republic for 8 years.

The AK47 has a 7.62mm long round that causes more shock damage that either M16 or SA80 which both use 5.56mm short.  The newer AK74 uses 5.56mm long (the 'long & short' is so old Soviet forces could use captured NATO ammo, but we couldn't use theirs).  I've fired all and the AK family are simple, heavy and designed for use my 'normal people'  It's not as accurate as either the M16 or SA80, but the smaller 5.56mm round is intended to stay in the target and cause more damage by bouncing around and clog up the supply chain with casualties.  The SA80 is accurate at 400m by your average 'Tom' (and this range forms part of the annual weapon test) and 600m by a good shot (thanks to X4 scope).  Not had the chance to test long range accuracy myself of the AK or M16, just a bit of fun on the range.

Oh, (light blue touch paper and walk away)and to fuel further debate I found the SA80 reliable and robust enough, contrary to the stories BUT (big BUT) it must be maintained and cleaned - that's down to personal skills.  It all goes wrong when you abuse it.......

U.S. Air Force.  Been in since 1987. 2 More to go until 20.

Was deployed for both Gulf Wars, Dealt with Bosnia, and can't remember what all else.

I do sit behind a desk, but scheduling the aircraft maintenance and flying can be a bear.  So much for a brain to remember.
