Problems with 7800 GS

I just installed an XFX 7800 GS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150131) and I am having some major lag every 10 or 15 seconds. It works beautifully in between these hangups, always above 60 FPS, but then I lag out for about a second. As far as I know I did everything correctly during the installation:
Uninstalled drivers/software for old video card
Defragged
Installed new card and plugged in power connector to it
Installed new drivers from Nvidia website

I've tried everything, updating punkbuster before I start BF2, reinstalling drivers from Nvidia and XFX, reinstalling BF2, lowering in game video settings, updating my Intel 875P chipset drivers, playing on small servers with only 20 or 30 players, banging my head against the wall...

Every review I've read about this card is positively glowing (for an AGP card), so I'm thinking I just got a defective one. Weird thing is, I don't have any problem at all on singleplayer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

System specs: 2gigs RAM, Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ, XP Pro

turn the graphics to medium in the game, or decrease your resolution but keep the graph setting on high, if it still lags on low/med settings, RMA that thing.

EDIT:

ROFLMAO.. some idiot gave that card a 1 star, because it didn't work.. and the retard states he has a PCI-E mobo.. and its a goddamn AGP card.

If you start lagging every 1-15 seconds.... Are you sure it's not on the dot every 20 sec ? Because then it's your punkbuster settings... Try the following next time you're in a game:

press tilte or delete, or whereever you have your console (check your key assignment), when the console pops up type: "pb_sleep 500" without the hyphens ofcourse. Then type "pb_writecfg" again without the hyphens. This should set the time between each punkbuster scan from 20 to 500 sec.

Also, you might want to try to clear your cache after installing a new card. it's in the documents folder under battlefield2

You said this doesn't occur in singleplayer, the problem of yours may be your ping, yes your ping.
If you go on servers far far away you'll have mutch more ping than closer servers, due to this distance other people are ahead of you while you still have to send your data, thus the stuttering.
Try joining a server close to the country you live in or just look for servers with a low ping value.

Thanks for responses, but I was already aware of everything you guys have brought up. I've already got the punkbuster set to 500 and I never join a server if my ping is greater than 90. I think I just got a bad card, so I'm gonna return it.

I´ve heared about those lags on the XFX 7800GS Extreme... Those cars are factory oc´ed but it seems like the old G70 chip (the chips for the GS series arent stable enough for GT/GTX and therefore sorted out and less featured as the PCI-E series) doenst fit to XFX´s overclocking.

Try underclocking it to the rate of a standard 7800GS. If this doesnt solve your issues, RMA that thing.

How do I underclock the video card?

On another note, I upped the AGP aperature from 128MB to 256MB, but that didn't work. And I've forgotten to mention so far that my power supply is 460 Watts, which should be OK. I believe the minimum for this card is 400.

your powersupply is fit for this card. Erm, I dont get it about the AGP interface... You upped it from 128 MB to 256MB?! This 7800GS cards should run with 256MB in standard settings!

do a search for enabling coolbits. it is a clocking feature that nvidia put in their drivers. i cant remember how to do it (XFX 7800GTXoc) but it involves going into the registry. but it does work.

If it doesn't happen in singleplayer then I'd almost guarantee it's not the cards problem. UNLESS you mean it doesn't happen in 16 player maps. That would sorta make sense since 16 player maps have much less geometries to render, thus much less data on the pipelines, thus your card doesn't break out the sweats so much.

So if it doesn't cock up in 16 player online maps then the card is stuffed.

If it does cock up in 16 player online maps, then it's must have something to do with your network, not your graphics card...

interesting, i never even thought about that. While trying to troubleshoot this, I always knew there was something missing in my step-by-step, logical problem-solving because of this singleplayer vs multiplayer issue. I'll try playing a small map online. Then I'll try underclocking regardless of the result, cuz I like to fly jets, which aren't in small maps.

Btw, who needs customer support when you've got bf2s.com? +1 all around.

Check out this link. It was the new version of Webroot Spysweeper all along. Uninstalled it and now everything is great.
