It gives me some bullshit message about the CLI interface saying it needs to close.  The window still appears behind that and it works fine but i'd rather not have stupid message that closes it when I click O.K.

It does this every time you open it up?  I think I've seen this error before, but forgot what caused it and how I fixed it.  I would just suggest uninstalling it.  Restart.  Install the newest (Version 6.6) on ATIs site.  Restart.  Then try it out.  Make sure you restart after every installation/uninstallation.  I tried shortcutting it a few times and it always screws up afterwards.

I just uninstalled it and it looks like ATi's website is down now.  I hope that's not it.

Yeah, my internet was being retarded for a sec.  Should I bother installing XP SP2 like ATi recommends or just download the drivers?

You dont have Service Pack 2 for XP??  I would recommend downloading it if you dont have it for security/performance issues.  But it's not required for the drivers.

you should have sp2 installed. also i would drop CCC for ATiTool or ATT
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

No, you just need the .NET framework 1.1, your message will go away immediately.

Alternatively, I prefer using the ATI drivers only, then using ATI Tray Tools for all the nice options.

I actually agree with these guys.  Though I dont really care about it anymore.  It's really an issue of RAM usage with CCC cuz it uses more to run it.  But now that I have 2 GBs, I dont care to run it anymore.

Same here.  And you're right, installing the .NET 2.0 is known to cause issues with the CCC.

I installed everything again and sure enough it does the same god damn thing.  Windows update is being a pain in the ass and is EXTREMELY unclear about how I just download the friggin SP2 instead of all this other shit for SP1.  I used to have SP2, then I had to completely reinstall Windows because Norton piece of shit AV was sucking really bad with updates and made the OS fail and the HP reinstall dics only came with XP SP1.  So unless there's a site with a download for SP2 besides Windows Update, i'll avoid all the bullshit and use SP1.

See my post above.  If you have .NET 2.0 installed, uninstall it.  Also, unless you are running Crossfire, there is no need for CCC.  You can use ATi Tools or ATi Tray Tools to do all the same stuff.

AS for SP2, if you don't want to deal with the Windows updater, just download SP2.  It's the first update listed in the XP downloads section.

I'm downloading SP2 right now, I don't use Crossfire because I only have AGP x4, and I don't know how to uninstall the .NET 2.0 shit.

It's listed in Add/Remove Programs as "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0".

Did you see the .NET 1.1 listed in your Add/Remove Programs?  If not, you should be able to select it in the Windows updater.  Select the Custom scan, and look in the "Software, Optional" area.

Also, don't forget that if your Radeon card shipped with a driver disk that included the CCC, that disk will also have .NET 1.1 on it.

I downloaded it but it won't let me install it because the program is afraid it'll update the wrong thing and it wants me to verify that something already installed.  wtf does it want now?

I personally cannot stand the CCC.  It's bloated, it uses an embarrasing amount of resources, and it also requires the .net framework.  I've been using Omega drivers for the last couple of years and I have to say it is vastly superior to ATI's own drivers (Omega is a beta tester for ATI drivers so he knows them well).  The only downside is that you are usually one driver release behind the current ATI release.

Also, if you are not willing to run a third party driver, you should read this article over at tweakguides, it offers a lot of info on reducing the CCC bloat and unnecessary functions from the control center.  I highly recommend following this ATI Catalyst tweakguide:

By Windows updater, I mean when you click on Start > All Programs and up at the top of that list is the item called "Windows Update".

YAY!  It worked and now CCC doesn't give me CLI shit anymore.  Thanks for your help.  +1

Can anyone tell me what Catalyst A.I. does for the video quality?

Glad I could help.

As for the A.I., it works by optimizing texture access and other things.  Here is a quick blurb I Googled.

So that brings us to today, we now have a beta build of an upcoming ATI driver which features the Catalyst AI functionality (Catalyst Control Centre only). The basic idea behind Catalyst AI is that it gives the end user the option to completely disable the optimizations in ATI's driver should they feel its necessary.

For those of you interested in specifics, Catalyst AI uses ATI's Texture Analyzer technology (R9600 Series and R4xx series) to optimize performance in any Game/3D application. What about support for older boards? Ati have responded with the following: "We fully support CATALYST A.I. on all R3XX hardware. In fact the R3XX series of products will see an even larger performance boost in Doom 3 than the RADEON X series of products."
ATI believe that whilst doing this they maintain the correct image quality and in some cases can even improve IQ. Cat AI does this by analyzing individual textures as they are loaded in order to choose the best and fastest way for them to be displayed. Settings available to the user are Off, Standard and Advanced. By default the drivers are set to Standard. In most cases Standard should be sufficient as it uses less CPU overhead than Advanced and its up to the end user to decide which option works best on their system in each particular game or application. There should be no IQ difference between the two settings however in games where there are frequent texture loads or when using a slower system the extra computations may cancel out the performance increases gained by using the Advanced algorithm.

As well as the texture optimization algorithm there is a second aspect to Catalyst AI and that is the application specific optimizations and tweaks. Examples of these application specific items are forcing Anti Aliasing off in the driver for Splinter Cell or Prince Of Persia because AA doesn’t work in those titles. ATI have informed us that they will never specifically detect a synthetic benchmark with Catalyst AI optimizations however some benchmarks may see improved scores due to using game engines that have improvements within the driver. ATI have also guaranteed that they will only optimize if they can do so without any reduction in Image Quality.

I'm glad Windows XP failed when it did or I never would've downloaded these awesome Catalyst drivers and would've still been using those shitty 2003 drivers that came on the CD(I'm also glad I lost the CD, that helped with the cause and effect of getting the Catalyst drivers).  I had Catalyst A.I. disabled until today when I put it on standard and I like it a lot.  It doesn't have to load the textures for BF2 as i'm moving along, they're just right there the whole time.

Thanks to the CCC, I can play BF2 for a good 4 and 1/2 hours with Medium settings, 100% view distance, and 2x AA with no choppiness or crashing and it looks DAMN good.  All that on a Radeon 9600 256MB.  After i've played it that long the card starts to get hot and it lags a little bit and the texture quality goes down but i'm pretty sure that's normal when you've been playing that long.  I love playing with AA, everything looks so much more lifelike.
