I have to run it at 800x600, all options low except View Distance at 100%.

basics:
Pentium M 1.5GHz
512 MB DDR333 RAM
Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo 128MB
If you can tweak your settings at all, I would - with all settings Low you not actually getting 100% view distance - now I'm not sure which setting you need to change, but by stepping up from 'Low' to 'Medium' you can suddenly see a hell of a lot further! If your system can handle it, try increasing each setting from Low to Medium (just one at a time) - you should be able to quickly work-out which setting it is you need to change...

Though, with your system, I should probably say "Good Luck!"...

1024 x 768 (128mb 6600GT)

I could run higher but I prefer to get better fps (renderer.drawfps 1)

I use everything on Low with Geometry on High, AA Off and View Distance Full

I have been told that you need Geometry on high as it helps seeing things at a distance.

Running everything on full is great if you have the machine as well as just playing for fun, however I think you'll find playing on lower settings (removing un needed effects) and getting a better fps (especially in construction buildings) will help you play just that bit better.

When you do this you can see people alot easier as well!

Hope this helps

I run 1280x960, and set the nV drivers to fix aspect ratio on my 1280x1024 LCD panel.

All those forcing their game to use 1280x1024 are stretching the picture. Forcing resolutions does not fix aspect ratio. As such, everything will look stretched vertically.

Using 1280x960 gives me 32 black pixels at the top and bottom of the screen, which I can't see anyway as I have a black bezel. And it's still native resolution, as the extra pixels are added, everything is perfectly sharp.

Further to my post.. just in case you don't believe me!

BF2 uses 4:3 aspect ratio. 800x600 is 4x3. 1024x768 is 4x3. 1280x960 is 4x3. And 1600x1200 is 4x3.

1280x1024 is not 4:3. It's stretched vertically.

Get a new videocard.  A 9550 doesn't have the power.  I suggest a 6800GT/GS.

1024 X 768 -> Med to High Settings w/ 4x AA.

I can put on 1280 x 1024, but the loading and fps drops in certain conditions like arty-strikes so I keep it a bit lower.

Machine:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4 Ghz
256 MB ATI Radeon (Sapphire) X600 Pro
1 gig RAM (SD 600 MHZ)
