Looking to upgrade my pc so that it will be able to run BF2.

The specs (dont laugh!)
2.4 Ghz P4
768MB RAM
Nvidia MX420

Was looking for a better GFX card preferably for under £70 (oh yeh has to be AGP)

What do you think of an X1600?

Any ideas?

What level would this run BF2 on? All low?

Thanks

Try a 7800GS. It's probably not under £70, though

Thanks but thats kinda too expensive.

Im looking at the Nvidia 6600s and 6800s, but what should i be looking at for ATI?

Also, please clarify, GT and GS are good and LE is bad, right?

Yup. GT is the best out of the 3 while GTX is better than that again

So what would be better, a 6800LE or a 6600GT?

As far as AGP Cards go, I'd look for a X850 used...  Plenty out there for cheap...  If New is your preference, the X1600 is an excellent card.  7800GTxs are only available in PCI-e so thats out even if it was under 70

7800GS is a waste of money....

I don't know really, have a look around ebuyer(i find them very good).  My radeon x600 can just about run the game on medium, so you'd be surprised what you get for your money.

you should get an x800GTO 100-160 US$   it has decent speeds, but no SM 3.0 , I have an x1600PRO, if you can get 2gb of ram or 1.5gb you should be able to run med/high with either one of the cards, a 6800 is okay too. Just you should have to buy a strong power supply:(

OK, i think ive narrowed it down a bit.

Either a 6600 128MB or a 256MB X1600

Definitely the 256 MB X1600.  It's a lot newer and I know it'l be faster than than any 6600.  Plus 256 MB is pretty much the minimum you want to game on with newer games.

Can anyone tell me if this card will help.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications … mp;CatId=0

I'm running a P4 3.0 with 1.5 GIG DDR2 ram with a ATI X300 128mb PCI - E video card.  This card has done the trick but while trying to learn to fly running into problems with seeing very little at high speeds.

any help is appreciated,

how bout a GeForce 6800 256mb?  I have a 128mb and run settings on mid/high, no lag, so I'm assuming a 256mb could go even higher...

I was looking at one but I do not have DVI, only VGA and the 6800 extreme is a duel DVI.  Will that card be any better than what I'm running?

thanks for the response,

Personally i would consider going for something that has 128mb and 256bit.  As well as adding 512mb-1g of RAM.

I have an ATI Radeon 9800pro(128/256) and it works great with some settings on high and most on medium.  My motherboard recently had a major problem, when two of my three RAM dimms went dead.  This knocked me down to 512mb of RAM (was running 1024mb dual channel).  I noticed that my graphics got horribly choppy, and when i dropped them all down to low settings it only improved slightly.  I've got a new motherboard, processor, and an extra gig of RAM on order.  My problem should be fixed soon.

If you can't go with 256mb/2556bit i would suggest the 128mb/256bit over the 256mb/128bit.

Karma-Kills this is the route i think i would go with personally.

This is great.  Thanks for all your help.  If you get a sec please tell me what you think of this card.

I'm a "noob" and still trying to figure all this stuff out.

So you're saying that going from 1.5 gigs to 2 gigs of RAM will make a big difference?

Sorry to hear about your computer issues, hope the new rig works well.

Something like that would work.  I don't imagine the extra memory would help all that much at this point.  I would suggest something like this video card http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications … p;CatId=0.  If you can't afford that save up the extra $40 until you can.  The added 128bit of memory interface will do a world of good.  Well worth the added $40.

A simple geforce FX52 or 5900 will do JUST FINE in your setup. You can usually get one of these cheap on Ebay. If you can find one get an 6xxx series or a readoen 9xxx. They're also good.
While you can't run everything on HIGH, you can run everything on medium and increase your view distance to around 90-95%

AND you can get one of these cards for around £20-40. If you're having trouble finding one PM me, and I'll sell you an old FX5200 for £20.

Try this link:

http://computers.listings.ebay.co.uk/Gr … ngItemList

EDIT: You might want some more memory before buying anything really big. Also the AGP port is kinda outdated, so dont spend too much money on an AGP card.

Nvidia 6600GT 256 MB AGP8x (around 150€) will fit for your system, otherwise try a 6600GT 128 MB (around 120-130€ depends on the brand). Those cards both support shader 3.0. I dont think a Radeon 9**** or X8**, even a Nvidia FX5*** card is a good idea, they dont support DX 9.0 (expect X800 + x850) and dont support the shader 3.0 I also may suggest you get 1 Gigs of RAM.

just my 2 cents
