Since all my satirical attempts to approach this topic have been shut down and/or spammed into non-existence, I guess I have to just do it straight up, no giggling.

If you think this poll has been done here before (not including my ill-fated attempts ), please post a link to it instead of just telling me to search -- I did already and didn't find one.

If you think everybody thinks the way you do about this, you are wrong.  Please feel free to add some insight, especially if you felt the options I provided were too limiting, or in some way biased.

Cheers.

The people who frequent this part of BF2S actually do give a shit, and it is all more than apparent that you don't.  This particular part of the forum is NOT for BF2, but is indeed for what the actual forum title states.  This is for Debate and Serious Talk.  If you choose not to respect that, and choose to not respect the fact that people can talk about things other than BF2 all day, than I strongly recommend that you refrain from posting here and stick to the BF2 Chatter sections.

If by the "End of Days" you mean some kind of divinely appointed day of judgement with some magic man in the sky handing out subpeonas to all and sundry then no.

If you mean will there be a point in time when Humanity as a race will become extinct, then yes.

As both an act of contrition and good faith, I'll assume this is, in fact, a legitimate post now.

I'd start by asking for more clarification, as was previously posted.  Is this a fire and brimstone fire from God end of days, or is this simply ipso facto, humanity dies?  I think we have to accept the likelihood that humanity will die out.  I don't see our species with the capacity or probability of existing forever.  The Earth will certainly die out as well.  If not of it's own accord, then when Sol inevitably goes Red Giant and swallows up the inner 4 planets.  At our rate of exploration, we won't be off this rock by then anyway and that very well may be our last moment.

Yeah, the first one is what I meant.  This is probably contentious, but I think there's no non-theological reason to assume we are not, as a species, theoretically immortal.  I also think our rate of exploration in fact bodes incredibly well for our chances of making it off this rock before Sol goes nova...

Anyway, I will put my cards on the table:  I am agnostic, with strong atheistic leanings.  As such, my sense of apocalyptic beliefs is that they are essentially superstitious.  That said, it seems reasonable to me that people who hold such beliefs could be motivated to act in accordance with what they feel to be pre-ordained in some sense.

Of course, I come from a Christian family and the cultures I am part of have strong Christian traditions, and there's probably no escaping some aspects of those traditions.  It's my contention that a deep-seated apocalyptic belief system permeates primarily Christian cultures, largely including individuals who no longer consider themselves Christian, in my view.

Further, I believe this leads to a necessarily pessimistic view of our prospects as a species, in general.  And in those cases where such a view is considered not only inevitable -- but also righteous and just -- I consider such beliefs to be essentially self-fulfilling, if given the opportunity.  This concerns me, and I wonder what can be done about it.

Please note that I only make reference to Christianity because it's (a) "my" culture; and therefore (b) the one I'm most familiar with.  I don't doubt there are apocalyptic beliefs in other religions, I just am more inclined to look at what I know first and foremost, rather than outsourcing all the world's problems to secondhand accounts of other people's religions.

Anyway, I'd like to hear other people's views on this, especially those that answered Yes.

OMG THAT PIC IS FUCKING WRONG MAN.

Moving on to the topic at hand. The end of days WILL be along way away (I say will, because the sun will swell up and implode or whatever whether you knew that or not).... I don't think i'll see the end of days but I think there will be some worldwide pandemics.

I think, as with many things, it is widely open to interpretation.  I think the Earth will be destroyed as a direct result of Sol expanding to red giant.  This will create a very close approximation to raining fire from the skies as is foretold, so in a sense - science and religion agree here

That gives us 4-5 billion years to settle outside the Solar System.  I think if it's remotely possible, that's enough time to figure it out.

Destroying the Earth is harder than you may have been led to believe.

You've seen the action movies where the bad guy threatens to destroy the Earth. You've heard people on the news claiming that the next nuclear war or cutting down rainforests or persisting in releasing hideous quantities of pollution into the atmosphere threatens to end the world.

Fools.

The Earth was built to last. It is a 4,550,000,000-year-old, 5,973,600,000,000,000,000,000-tonne ball of iron. It has taken more devastating asteroid hits in its lifetime than you've had hot dinners, and lo, it still orbits merrily. So my first piece of advice to you, dear would-be Earth-destroyer, is: do NOT think this will be easy.

This is not a guide for wusses whose aim is merely to wipe out humanity. I (Sam Hughes) can in no way guarantee the complete extinction of the human race via any of these methods, real or imaginary. Humanity is wily and resourceful, and many of the methods outlined below will take many years to even become available, let alone implement, by which time mankind may well have spread to other planets; indeed, other star systems. If total human genocide is your ultimate goal, you are reading the wrong document. There are far more efficient ways of doing this, many which are available and feasible RIGHT NOW. Nor is this a guide for those wanting to annihilate everything from single-celled life upwards, render Earth uninhabitable or simply conquer it. These are trivial goals in comparison.

This is a guide for those who do not want the Earth to be there anymore.

Yes, I saw this on the thread it was originally pasted into.  I wasn't sure what it had to do with that topic, and I don't really know how it relates to this one either, except in the most tangential way.  Did you vote yes, no, or self-fulfilling?  I have a vague idea how Sam Hughes (the author of the cited website) would vote...

9. God told me to do it

Religion is regarded by many as the most dangerous weapon of any kind. Certainly its damaging effects on human history cannot be overstated. People will do anything, anything, up to and including the torture and murder of millions of people if they sincerely believe, however misguidedly, that whatever deity or deities they believe in are on their side.

It doesn't matter if you really believe God wants you to destroy the Earth. If your minions buy it, they may never be stopped, even after you're long dead. Faith is powerful.
