G'day,

With the release of 2142 getting closer, I think i'm going to get another video card to keep up with the times.
atm I have a ATI 9600, 256mb which set me back 160$ aussie.
What are some good mid-top of the range AGP cards, about 400-600$ worth? And there can I buy them in Australia? I had enough trouble trying to get the 9600, because I was told that AGP cards are becoming exinct..

specs:

pent. 4, 3.1 gHz
1.5 gig RAM
ATI 9600

From what i've read, it isn't worth buying agp cards anymore. I'm in the same situation as u. 9600xt. I would bite the bullet and upgrade your motherboard and get a pci-express card. Toms hardware have an interesting article entitled "Radeon X1600 Pro: Prolonging the Graphics Life of Your AGP Machine" - http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/06/14/ … x1600_pro/ however I think their conclusion is don't bother heh.

If ur looking for a high-end card for AGP then there is nothing better than a 7800GS. At the moment you can get a GainWard Bliss 7800 GS+ Golden Sample 512MB in AGP for around $600 including postage from places like AUSPC (www.auspc.com.au) and Scorpion Tech (www.scorptech.com.au). Oh and this card is pretty much top of the line you can get in AGP so get them while you can.

EDIT: Yeah, what 1on1killa said.. rofl.. got the post in before i could type fast enough. As i am getting mine on Monday morning I know for a fact that AUSPC still had a few in stock as of Friday morning. hope this helps you.

Those high end 7 series are fairly expensive and not everyone wants to go out and buy a whole new motherboard, etc. for PCI-E.

I'd go with the... 7600 I think it is? Not sure as I'm outta the loop how the 7 series compare. Anyway, I'm running a 6800 GT OC myself and it runs BF2 great.

You were told right. I have an AGP card myself, but it was purchased in late 2004 when PCI-e was still suffering from instability and sporaidic inavailability.

In AUD terms, you don't want to spend ~$500 on AGP anymore, as its projected lifespan is pathetic. Instead, you could purchase (in USD terms; sorry for the laziness), a $150 PCI-e board, and a $350 PCI-e video card, which amounts to about $650 AUD.

However, since you are waiting for 2142, I advise you to save your money until the date of its release, then buy a PCI-e board and an NVIDIA G80 (release pending), with its GDDR4 memory and Shader 4.0/DirectX 10 support. Not only will you be able to run 2142 like a dream, but you'll be all strapped in and secured for Crysis, Unreal Tournament 2007, and all that other good stuff.

The type of PCI-e board you choose is entirely up to you, depending on the processor of your choice (which is a topic for another thread). Whether you're going with Conroe, AM2, or even (if they're cheap enough by the time you get one), S939, any will run 2142 without difficulty.

I agree with all the PCI-E brethren here, PCI-E's what's up to date and AGP is dying off slowly, a sad truth but in effect nonetheless. I have two AGP cards, an ATI x700 PRO and an MSI GeForce 6600GT, got them when I thought my computer could house them, couldn't. Motherboard was just too far behind to even try running them so I'm shit out of luck and using my fiancee's computer which actually has PCI-E and uses a 6800.

PCI-E all the way, but long live AGP for as long as it can

I also run a 9600 of the same specs, I can't upgrade because I only have a 200 Watt proprietary PSU.  It should be able to play 2142 anyway though.

It may be cheaper to get a PCI-E mobo and a High end PCI-E Graphic card instead.
