Well I've got it at 1.4V Idle drooping to 1.3 running 3.6Ghz. It's at 80*C in BF2 so I'm going to try a CPU tube before anything else.

Got the 9700PRO Up to 345/315 Under an Arctic Cooling Silencer.

I get high settings all round, so even on a 128Mb card BF2 IS CPU dependant like FS9.

I even use a Pentium D 805 clocked to 3,6 GHz, i only increased the FSB to 180 and my memory to DDR2-720. As cooler i use a Zalman CNPS 9500 AT and under load i get a temperature around 50°C. What cooler do you use?

Try using the default VCore, it's enough for 3,6 GHz.

It wont run 3.6 without a light overvolt.

It runs 45*C Idle. just peaks to 80 in games. And the sensor jumps about like a horny cat so I doubt it's actually up more than 75*C (Threashold temp).
I've got it at 3.4 now.

The Thermaltake Big Typhoons 120mm fan is about an inch from the left side of the case so it's just recirculating air. Time for an intake then see If I can make 3.8.

Well I see alot of things wrong here sorry...

First the 30C spike in temperatures from idle wow that's alot. Also 45C at idle is quite high.

I'd start with a better heatsink, but the best heatsink means nothing without a decent install.
Google for heatsink lapping and get some artic silver, DONT USE TOO MUCH!!!! I would think you should be able to get that processor in the low 30C at idle.

Sorry for the all caps but that's the biggest mistake most people make.

Check your case temps as well it's possible your not getting the heat out of the case, you said this... think about air flow. I generally concentrate on removing the heat at the upper rear near the cpu. The side case fans suck and are a bad idea IMHO. All air should be taken in at the front and bottom of the case.

Now on the voltage drop, a voltage drop generally means your powersupply isn't up to par for that current level. You'll probably find that the voltage drop won't be as bad if you can reduce the temp at load

BTW you should be able to get closer to 4G out of that chip with decent cooling.

45*C Idle for this particular CPU OC'ed is very cool. It's not called a heater for nothing. The usuall barrirer for OCs is heat on this chip.

My biggest problem is having to run 1.425V Idle for it to only droop to 1.35 under 100% load. I hear there are such things as droop mods that can be done with a pencil but I can't find any. I have an Asus P5P-800SE.

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon is just about the best Air cooler on the market. I just need to stop it recirculating air with a CPU Tube.

I use a thin thin layer of Arctic Ceramiqué (0.50*C/W). Which is just 0.02*C/W different from Arctic Silver which scores 0.48*C/W. (Toothpaste scores 0.47*C/W and water scores 0.43*C/W but they dry).

I just did.

Video cards often have less effect on games than you think. Depends on the game

Flight Simulator 2004 is tha same; CPU Hungry.

A 9700 is equivalent to a FX card from Nvidia. None of those can max out BF 2.

OK I am not real sure what type of the Pentium D it is (unless its just the 1 model), but I read in toms hardware
(www.tomshardware.com) that the Pentium D 2.66 can be overclocked to 4.1GHz (with normal cooling).
Something about the clock multiplier being 20x.
The article is called "A 4.1 GHz Dual Core - Can It be True??"

My 805D is currently @ 3.8ghz and is very stable.

1.45v
45*C idle
63*C max

Thermal monitor seems to kick in if i go over 70*C, which means if it OC to around 4.0ghz it drops to around 2.6ghz under heavy load

Edit: Forgot to say i have exactly same chip as Toms Hardware and i'm using water cooling.. so i think its fair to say 4ghz+ is not guarenteed

I have the same chip THG used.

But my OC is being limited by the motherboards horrendous voltage droop under load (It's falling from 1.54V to 1.24V, OUCH).

I've got it at stock speeds till I can find a suitable mod. Or a better motherboard.

I run BF2 @ 1024x769 & 32.

The 9700PRO Beats the FX5950 into the ground. nVidia didn't catch up untill the 6??? seiris (The 6600GT just crests the 9700PRO). Although I'm not getting absolutoly everything because BF2 was designed with a higher version of Pixel Shader than the 9700PRO can display.

And I can run it maxed with the CPU over 3.4Ghz, about 18FPS which is just playable. Now I'm running with the PD stock I've pulled 3 settings down to Medium.

Do take note: My 9700PRO is OC'ed.

we know its all the same chip (theres only 1 pentium D 805!) but if u have high quality yields then its easier to get high oc

You can determine the quality of your 805 with the original VCore at 2,66 GHz. Easy rule: As lower, as better.

I think at this framerate it's unplayable. 18fps is already a Slide Show.

I think it's decent core, It's just the Voltage Droop that's slaughtering me.

Ok I'm actually upgrading from my pentium 4 550 3.4 GHz HT chip to the Pentium D 805 2.66 chip (plan on OC'ing it to at least 3.8 with water cooling). Any words of advice? I'll be running PC5300 DDR2-667 Ram (2Gb)... and I use the ATI Radeon X800XL PCI-Exp. video card.. should i have any issues at all?? I'm putting a cooler on the video card too... anyone have any luck OC'ing the x800xl?
