Jumping jack shit balls.

In my process of making a frag movie, I've got...55 gigs of fraps video. I know that the fraps codec has almost no compression whatsoever, but this pisses me off because I can't import it into Avid FreeDV because it just locks up the program. Not to mention it would take days to complete.

What do you filmmakers recommend?

All I can think of is:

"Find" a better program
Transcode all of the footage into smaller files, but even then it will take forever to import.

if you have an ATI video card you can use it to encode. usually faster then some crappy processor

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I use VirtualDub to compress my FRAPS rips.

I'm tempted to use Vdub (haha, the VW commercials...) but it will still be in the hundreds of megs, and even then it will take forever for this program.

I'll test it with one...

My 800x600 FRAPS videos end up being about 1/10th of their original size on a very good quality setting. You can go smaller, but pixelation starts to occur.

You can also set a target size in VirtualDub and it'll do what it needs to to make it hit that size.

But really, you should reduce the resolution probably as well as there's no real need for huge ass video, especially when filesize is an issue.

Oh, and here's an example:

* 800x600 (quite big), a little over 8 seconds long
* FRAPS version was 68.1 MB
* That version is only 5.38 MB and I coulda gone a smaller

At this point it's not the compression that's a problem, it's this program.

Over an hour to import 5 minutes of video in a 45mb file.

Fuck that?

I have 600GB of total space on my rig, and keep 100GB free for video recording. Your options are to either buy another hard drive or use RAD Video Tools to quickly compress what footage you have. Now you know why movie studios have rooms full of digital storage.
