I just woke up a 4 A.M., saw that the computer was on, Norton kept giving me that stupid "Your Norton AV auto-detect is not on" message. This is Norton 2004 and once you turn off auto-detect, you can't turn it back on unless you restart it. I tried to work around that, I figured maybe manual updating would turn it back on so I installed 3 new updates, and closed the window, then it gave me a message that I should restart that computer. It automatically restarts it, but there's one little problem with the start-up. The Windows XP loading screen bar doesn't make the blue bar move though the clear bar like it's supposed to, the computer doesn't go to login screen, it just stays on the Windows XP screen. I figure, maybe it's just one of those retarded things that happens for absolutely no reason, so I hold the power button for five seconds(auto off), it brings me to the screen asking me if I want to use normal mode again, or safe mode. Normal mode, same thing happens. Then I try a system restore to yesterday in safe mode, didn't seem to work. So here I am in safe mode, not knowing what to do. Does anybody know what I need to do?
what updates did u install? Win XP updates? which ones?
Updates to Norton Anti-Virus 2004. Also, it can't seem to find my sound drivers in safe mode, is that normal?
if all else fails......do a destructive format of the hard drive. It resets the whole freakin thing. boot from the windows cd and go to advanced option and then select destructive format. use it as a last resort though becuase it is basically a wipe of the drive
Not finding your sound drivers can be normal in Safe Mode. I had the some type of thing occur to me, but I could not update Norton's. I would try uninstalling the updates and/or Nortons. Then do a reboot to and see if you have the same issue._j5689_ wrote:

Norton 2004 SUCKS. It ruined my computer and I might have to fucking DELETE EVERYTHING because of stupid Norton piece of shit anti-virus. Fucking wonderful.
Symantec can't even help me because they don't support Norton 2004 anymore.
thats why i dropped Norton (and because i need a second pc just to run it, it's such a resource hog)_j5689_ wrote:

ok .... what i would try is to uninstall Norton, scan for spyware/viruses with something else, clean the registry if that doesnt work make a repair install (your win32 or similar could be fucked up; make sure that you have backups of everything because repair sometimes doesnt work). And if that doesnt work: reformat, because it is ususally easyer to reinstall everything than to spend days looking for some stupid problem that probabely cant be fixed
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
It doesn't seem to have any options to uninstall it. Before I do it anyway I need the names of some replacements.
try AVG antivirus and a-squared anti-malware. I have the free versions of both of these plus Zone Alarm free firewall
hope this helped

It won't let me install it right now probably. I can't figure out how to get to the application removal thing to get rid of what should be called Norton shitware 2004. Does anyone know how to get there?
This is what i use. Zone alarm is not there but i use it too. keeps everything running nice and smoothlybrome wrote:

I went to remove programs and I can't even uninstall anything unless it's in normal mode. This is such bullshit. I never liked Norton and i'm very pissed that this happened.
well you can always manually uninstall norton. there should be instructions in the internet to do that_j5689_ wrote:

Safe mode looks pretty strict, I doubt i'll be able to uninstall anything at all. It sucks, no 3D rendering in safe mode meaning no BF2 or WoW or Snooker or 3D solitaire, also no file transferring to my MP3 player even though I had some songs I was gonna put on it for the trip because it refuses to even detect the MP3 player, no sound, no uninstallation, no installation, I have to turn the computer on, hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off, then turn it on again to go into safety mode and log in. For some reason it still does Pinball though, lol.
Would a reinstall of XP work?
yup .. reinsatll solves all software related problems_j5689_ wrote:

Oh, just got back from Myrtle Beach. My brother installed XP and I just did an HP Pavilion restore. It didn't remember ANYTHING at all. It also doesn't detect my video card so I have to find some some way to make it, it considers it a "Video controller (VGA compatible)". I also have to get my dad to make my own account on it. I have to reinstall BF2 after I get the video card working again, which really sucks because it takes forever to install both BF2 and SF, then patch them both. I have a lot of work to do tomorrow, if I find my sister on this when I wake up, too fuckin bad for her because an 8-hour ride back from Myrtle Beach was just TOO long to wait to get all this shit straightened out.
did you try holding F8 before it starts to boot window, it shoudl bring up a screen asking which mode to boot into. You have to do it before any windows XP starts to booot ( ie while the bios is booting stuff)
I like my Norton Internet Security 2006. It works great.
You should think about backing up your data more often, so you don't have as much as a hassle when something craps out. I've been throught 4 HDDs this year, so I can appreciate how annoying it is to start from scratch, that is, until I started making backups.

Just installed the Catalyst 6.6 drivers. Are they O.K.? I couldn't find the original driver install CD(Lost it right after installing it the first time, lol) but I figured the drivers on the CD were outdated garbage anyway so I went to ATi.com and downloaded 6.6. So the computer now acknowledges the video card and that problem is therefore fixed. It's 3:40 A.M. on the East U.S. coast which is where I am. Insomniac ftw, lol.
