This is what I don't want to see again.
I think its time we made a descision about the space program. We either increase funding and vastly expand docking situations and research the possiblity of a long term colony, or hault it for a while. Enough of this old shuttle, enough of these small little trips.
No I am not a NASA hater. My grandfather worked at Goddard Space Flight Center, and devloped the ventalation systems. Hell I even get the Goddard Newsletter Paper thing, and have various space memorbilia in my room (plaques with flags flown in space etc.)

No one wants to see that happen again. What is your solution? Hope it doesn't happen, shut it down forever so it won't, or invest resources in improvement and development and persevere?Alexanderthegrape wrote:

That's more of what I was meaning to say. Either pick it up and run all the way with it, or don't pick it up at all, at least not until you're ready to go all the way.Snipedya14 wrote:

You want us to be in space for exploration? Okay, then start a colony on the moon and start preparing for a journey towards Mars. Don't want that? Too expensive? Too ambitious? Then hault the Space Shuttle Program, invest, research, and go back up in a few more years. Meanwhile those millions and billions of dollars can go towards increasing education, increasing the quality and quantity of equipment for our armed forces, and hell, maybe invest in some of it so we can get out of this god forsaken trillion dollar debt.
yea like 1.3Spearhead wrote:
I say we temporarily hault the space shuttle program until the other major issues are resolved.
Umm...I'm confused by your statement, because, wasn't the trillion dollar deficit largely in part of spending on the armed forces in the first place?Spearhead wrote:

I don't like our spending either, in fact, I hate Bush. But while we have the chance and the money, we ought to be taking every dollar that we can already spare w/o going further in debt to improve the military and other aspects of government spending. And that includes scraping the Space Shuttle Program and using that money for other things. For the time being, at leastHavazn wrote:

Because we're already in Iraq and we either have to be completely dedicated, or not dedicated at all.Havazn wrote:

see now thats the attitude that makes ppl hate America, instead of wasting more of billions of dollars on guns, and things that go boom why cant anyone ever think about buying food for the starving people around the world or maybe to research a cure to disease........but no the military is whats important.....(sarcasm)

I'm a liberal, and this issue isn't about what we're not doing for other countries, I'm saying we can redirect money from the space program to other branches of the government which are in greater need. How to distribute that money is the politicians job. That's why I'm a liberal.

fair enough and to be fair I don't think that the U.S is the only country spending a lot of money on their military rather then more constructive and helpful things for developing nations..in matter of fact i think many countries do the same thing it just disappoints me, especially when I hear 512 billion and i think how much food that can buy for people who are starving
As soon as the world realizes that the future is in space & not in war we might get somewhere before I die.
Nasa should get more funding, were going way too slow, & currently have all the eggs in one basket.

We have a basket? Which basket is that? Currently it seems like our eggs are still under/in the hens.TrollmeaT wrote:

Oh right. I understand - I thought you meant drive NASA's academic funds into the funds of the various powerful intelligence agencies' space funds (they have them, and they're quite hungry)Spearhead wrote:
Dude, you completely miss my point. Let's stop going to space ENTIRELY for the time being and spend that money to improve other things, either military equipment and training, or for diplomatic stuff. I was using the time of war thing for sarcasm. If we really are in a time of war, we should hault the space shuttle program and dedicate that money to improving weapons and equipment. Because in war, money means lives.Spark wrote:
No. We've already had two world wars, let's not start a space war, too.Spearhead wrote:
Were those being developed in the past 5 years? I'm not DISSING the space program, I'm saying we temporarily hault it to spend those millions of dollars on other things besides research. Remember, this is a time of war, after all.

Thats all fine and good. But the US military does not need additional spending. The military it has now is perfectly capable of a sustained drawn out mission such as OIF. The fact of the matter is that the world's resources are running out and while we have a power grid to work with, lets come up with solutions on how to, not just survive now, but in the future as well. The clock is ticking and spending money on things like, bullets, bombs and missles that just dissintegrate into nothing, spend it on alternative fuels, emissions lowering and environmental protection.Spearhead wrote:

You don't think that's a valid point? Look up what the PNAC's objectives are for space exploration.puckmercury wrote:

The space program is not a waste of money, the US wants to be the first to militarize space. Dominance over space = even greater global dominance.
Space is way overrated. Nice to look at, but wouldn't wanna live there.
Look at it this way -- would you want to live in Antarctica? At the bottom of the sea? In the middle of the fucking desert? Sure, if you built a big dome and filled it with hot chicks and lasers, but I think that's kind of missing the point.

@Havazn
i think alternative energy sources and environment protection are all wonderful ways to spend government money, i mean if we take care and protect this world and stop global warming their isn't that much of a demand for space exploration.

Pretty provocative act on our part, while we are up there lets collect everyones Else's satellites and create a " USA Space Monopoly"
global warming doesn't exist, it's a sham for eco-terrorists to milk their constributors for money, living in any of those places would be bitching spastic, especially the bottom of the sea, I would shave my head, wear velvet robes all day, smoke a pipe, and wear an eyepatch, maybe change my name to "Largo" or something, OOH OOH and have a ho named "Domino", and what if they chicks themselves had lasers? woohoo!

Its not the idea of living in space, its the fact that its the only other place we can look towards for our survival. eg, Recources on other planets
Spearhead, I've read your statements, and only have one thing to say. If you look throughout history and do the research, the greatest technological advancements in society have been created "in time of war". WWII is a perfect example. From the time it started to the time it finished, the countries involved had excelled by leaps and bounds. Some examples: US(mulitudes of new-advanced aircraft and tactics, ships, materials, the A-bomb), UK (invention of Radar, air defense tactics, and gound based operation tactics(the SAS, which most countries model their special forces after), Germany ( Rocket & Jet tech, as well as the Blitzkrieg, an hundreds of Science genious' that sought new life in the US and RUSSIA),
Nasa, has contiuned on throughout times of war for good reason. They are the ones that are testing a vast majority of the future military improvements that you are talking about. Dispite the battle field being in dark, dingy places, it's the satelites, new GPS & guidance systems that will improve both organizational and timing to make the tip of the sword sharper than ever. Even though you don't see the tech they are working on in raw form, it's out there in our soldier's hands and under their seats right now.
High strength materials, guidance, lazer tracking, light weight polymers ect...

there is an astounding amount of evidence that global warming is a natural cyclical action, not man made, most obvious one right now is that the sun is in a hot phase, after all the polar ice caps on mars are receding, and jupiter is seeing increased storm activity and a rise in atmospheric temps, are the fumes from my drag racing exiting earth orbit? Romans wrote of growing grapes in England for wine, some nordic tribes were known for cultivating wheat, these would be impossible without modern technologies now. There is a thread called "is global warming a real threat" with some links to some good sites whose authors' paychecks DON'T rely on propagating the GW craze, they get paid the same whether it's a threat or not.
Fair enough, but your statement said it doesn't exist, which implies the earth is not heating up regardless of man made or not. THAT is what I was asking for in terms of evidence.kr@cker wrote:
