This computer building business is kinda tough. Anyway, I bought me a HP Lightscribe 840i DVD burner and am having issues getting it to work on my computer. I originally bought the 740i but returned it thinking it was messed up, so I got the 840i instead but I'm still getting the same problem.

Everything looks fine in Explorer until I load up a CD into the drive. It'll kinda choke for a bit and doesn't do anything. If I try to explore the cd, it'll just stay stuck in that original window forever. Also, if I click on other drives (like main C: drive), it's info/details won't appear. In general, explorer seems to get messed up once there is some drive activity. Here's a vid of what is going on, maybe someone knows how to fix this. I really like these drives and I'd like to be able to use them, rather than going back to my old dvd drive.

Drive Access Errors

You can see what I'm talking about as I click on the different drives trying to read from them and such. The long pause in the beginning is me placing the cd in the drive. The second pause is the cd not accessing and not letting me do anything for a while. Then, I just eject the cd out of the drive and everything returns to normal.

Had a kinky experience with my new dvd writer last weekend too.

My cd writer still works but the tray jams when you want to eject it so you have to push the damn button about ten times for it to open so I thought why not buy myself a new dvd writer instead. Bought myself a Plextor 755A saturday, installed it in my pc fired it up and everything seemed ok, Windows immediately recognized what model it was and such. But when I put in some dvds and cds to test it, it just couldn't read them, it kept accessing the disc over and over again, only way to make it stop was push the eject button. The only thing he eventually could read were music cds.

Insert cd. Wait 90 seconds. CD identified as music cd. Open music player. Wait 30 seconds for track list to appear. Push play. Wait 20 seconds. Then the first song starts playing. After 7 seconds everything goes silent again. Another 30 secs go by and the next song begins???

So I took it back to the store the next day (which was open exceptionally on sunday) to trade it in for another one of the same type. Got home and installed it but like the first one it couldn't read anything. So went back to the store again the same day, but got myself a Plextor 750A instead. Luckily that one works perfectly. The entire 755 batch was probably useless.

Hey when you installed your drive, did you mess with any of the jumpers by any chance?? I just installed the drive as a secondary drive, with the jumper set on "Slave" and it worked perfectly fine. I'm thinking maybe it wants to be set specifically as master (not cable select) when I put it as a single drive. I guess I'll find out later, but it's good to know the drive isn't messed up.

Yes I initially switched the jumper to slave since it is my secondary drive, my primary drive is a DVD rom. I also reversed the two, setting the writer as Master but that didn't change anything performancewise. Or lack-of-performancewise.

As a general rule, I avoid cable select altogether.  It lets me be more specific and confident of what files where.  Also, if you have room on your IDE controller and want to do disk to disk copying, or copying of files from both disks simultaniously, put them on seperate IDE controllers.

Your problem may be related to the IDE controller settings.

1. Go into Device Mangler (A.K.A. Device Manager).
2. Locate the IDE ATA/Atapi Controller listing.
3. Go into the properties of the controller on which your DVD drive is attached (e.g. primary or secondary).
4. Select the Advanced Settings tab.
5. Make sure that the Transfer Mode option is set to "DMA if available".
6. Close everything and reboot your system.
