With the 4th of July behind us, Independence Day in the US, I got to thinking about how many countries have their own Independence Day from Great Britain or the United Kingdom.

This world we live in would have a vastly different landscape, namely the UK would probably be THE superpower.

I know there are a bunch of countries that the UK (GB) lost control of, but were they all bloody like the United State's Revolutionary War?  Did the UK lose that many times or were the majority of them peaceful retreats to relinquish control back to the natives?

Whatcha think?

No, its correct. Independence was delcared on New Year's Day 1901.

I wonder why they moved it. Probably because they were a bit miffed about losing a day to party.

That's what I thought.
Most of the countries were given back without fighting. They just requested independence and got given it basically.

Many nations got there independance days after they left the commonwealth, yes. But the reason so many left without bloodshed was 1. Britain was completely broke after WW2, and couldnt reinvest all the capital nessacary to, say, retake all of there south east asian colonies? and 2. the US pressured them into giving up much of them empire that wanted to be let go. also possibly because they didnt want an empire in the changing world?

what i find funny is that here in australia, our national day, to celebrate the first fleet landing, is regarded more as a day off from work and stuff, where anzac day is MUCH bigger. and we celebrate a military defeat. meh, its all good to me.
