I'm willing to bet that the best you hear is in the US, they seem to have very good service over there. I'm on AOL which is currently 2Mb but supposed to be going to 8Mb soon and pay £30 a month.

gawwd,thats cheap compared to my isp here in australia,BIGPOND!!
I pay 55au a month for 1500/256 with 10gb download limit and thats at half price for a year to so actually its usually nearly a 100au a month,they are the dearest but also the best as far as im concerned.
However most other isp offer 8-10 mbit connections for less than that but i have tried a 8mbit connection before with another isp and was completely dissapointed by the performance as far as pings go they were no lower than my 1500 connection and my downloads were never above 250kBs which is far from the 8mbit connection should offer so i switched back to 1500/256 connection and get 10-15 ping on my local servers and thats great...)
Anyone else been dissapointed with these so called mega high speed adsl plans here in australia?

I live in Northern Ireland.
I have BT 8.2mb unlimited at £17/month at home
I have BT Buisness Broadband in the office 8.2mb & fixed IP for £22/month.

i had 2.2mb and havent noticed any difference in gaming between 2.2 & 8.2mb, just quicker download times for porn. I have a friend who works for BT and he turned me up before he quit so not everyones getting that for that money I think.

My hats off to BT, after a late shakey start they have pulled it outa the bag.

Is the service really as good as they make it out to be?

So far i haven't had any problems, it's quite a new system and i believe they had allot of teething problems.  I used to have 512k broadband and pay £17.99 a month for it, the difference in speed is amazing.  The only problem is, you will be hitting the bit torrent sites hard and your hard disk will soon fill up!

On 512k broadband i used to have a ping on my favorite server of about 40-50 and now its at a nice 12-13.

Just to clarify:

1 MB (big B) are 1024 Byte.

1 Mb (small b) are 1024 Bit.

8 Bit are 1 Byte.

DL und UL speed is mostly given in megabit (Mb). You have to devide it with 8 to get the actual info you want to know.

Example:
2 Mb DL is shown during a download as 250 kB!
And  a 8 Mb DL gives you actual 1 MB DL per sec.


But to answer you question:
