OK Im looking for a new Video card to enable me to bump my settings up higher for gaming.

I currently have an ASUS 9550 256mb card which I have been told is a bit underpowered for playing games.

My question is when i look for a new card what am I looking for?? Does a higher number = better performance, eg is a GeForce 7600 better then a GeForce6600.

http://www.computeralliance.com.au/part … SubCat=GAM

This is where Im looking and Im not really sure what Im looking at as I have never bothered with graphics cards until I got the BF2 bug.

(All prices are in Australian dollars and I would like to keep my cost down to abou $200 $250)

p.s. Im only running 1Gb RAM on an AMD 3200+ 64bit chipset with no PCIe slots only AGP.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

yes i have a 6600GT the 7600GT is far better

also u need to have a resonable power suply or else your motherboard may get fried if you have a graphics card that needs to much power. i think you need around 420 wats to run a 6600GT which is what i have so u should probably take it in to a computer store and get it checked out first

Hey, this is my first post on BF2s.com and I think I can offer some advice here. The best AGP card to get your hands on would be a 6800GT or 6800 Ultra but these cards are previous generation cards and are extremely hard to find at most stores (unless you look on ebay). To take the place, Nvidia released the 6800 GS which retail at around $300-350 and have 256mb of video memory. Also, a 7800 GS has been released to provide older AGP systems with a high spec card that is available to Pcie. I am not too sure about the performance of these cards, but for the price that gets asked, I dont think they are worth it. The best value for money card to go for would be a 6600 GT. I have had experience with this card in BF2 and I was more than impressed. There are both 128 and 256 mb versions of the 6600 but my advice is to make sure you get a GT as some of the 256 models are just marketing gimmicks.

ANd regarding the last post, the 7600 is actually a PcIe card and I dont think is available in AGP therefore cant really be compared to the 6600GT in this scenario, but yeah it is better.

Thanks for the info. I ran a Search on "AGP Graphics" and here I am.

I have an ATI Radeon 9550 and was wondering what a better card would be for AGP.  Thanks for the info.

My 9550 has 256mb ram so should my power supply be ok for the 6600 GT with 256mb?
Should I save my money If I am planning on having a comp. built within the next 6 months?(something w/sli)

Thanks again for the/any extra info

Save your money. AGP is dinosaur technology. Wait until you can save up enough for a new CPU, mobo and video card.

Kinda what I was thinking and probably what I will be doing.
I want to see BF2 on all high settings and still get above 40 FPS.
Im running med and low settings now just to get 30-40 FPS

I can run all high and get 50 fps but patch 1.3 messed up my game, so i cant run my game right. I just stick to low settings for now.

No it's not, AGP runs at the same speed that PCI-e does my friend. AGP has a max bandwidth of 8x, PCI-e has a max bandwidth of 16x. We haven't even fully utilized the 8x bandwidth. Therefore, PCI-e in itself is no faster than AGP.

I would get an ATi Radeon x800GTO. They are under 200$, and they are very nice.

Wrong!
AGP 8x has about 2 gb f bandwidth
PCI-E 16x has over 4 gb of bandwidth

Yep they are pretty good for BF2...my former friend has a X800PRO and he runs on highest,AMD64 3000+,2048mb ram and the X800PRO is what he have...he runs on highest settings at 1280x1024 with no lag..atleast thats what he told me.
w00t,didnt even know X1600PRO existed on AGP,didnt even know the X1xxx series did o.O

I have an x1600 in my MSI laptop and it runs BF2 no problem on almost all high settings. I think all high except lighting on medium and AA and AF off. I imagine the notebook version of the card would be underclocked so the x1600 pro should be a little better.

The X1600 Pro and the X800 Pro should have fairly similar performance. X800 series was the flagship series for ATI a few years ago and was replaced with the X1800 series. The X1600 is a midrange card, but should perform on par, or if not, come close to the X800 Pro.

the x1600 is going to perform better on newer games, because it can handle newer technologies like pixel shader 3.0.  However, the x800 has more raw speed, I believe.  You may also want to consider if the card is 128-bit or 256-bit.  256-bit should get you better performance. If you want to play newer games then I would recommend the x1600.  I have been looking at these two cards also, and I just ordered the x800 gto a couple days ago.  I found several benchmarks which put the x800 gto ahead of the x1600 in BF2, so that's how I made my decision.  Just my 2 cents.

Wow, Dinosuar Technology. I think ISA or a SIMM Slot would be more like Dinosaur technology.

A good indicator when deciding between cards is the Interactive VGA Charts over at Tom's Hardware. You can choose to compare two cards (AGP and PCI-E) and choose a benchmark (unfortunately BF2 isn't one of the benchmarks, but it still gives a good idea as to what card will perform better).
