Kit: Kills/Deaths (stat question)

I've never really figured this one out for certain. In the stats for your kit classes where you see kills and deaths and ratios, I have a question about the deaths. Are they how many times you were killed while PLAYING that class or are they how many times you were killed BY that class?

Could someone please clarify?

All K : D's go as:

Kills: Kills made with that weapon/vehicle/wheelbarrow
deaths: Times killed while being a class/holding a weapon/being in a vehicle

Therefore, your assault rifle K : D would be

all kills with an assault rifle : All deaths while holding an assault rifle
