My friend got a new computer and it came with this, yes it is only 16-bit.  The sound doesn't work for the speakers.  He tried it without the updated drivers no sound, we inserted the CD to upgrade the drivers, still no sound.  The speakers don't have a volume control on them and they're crappy eMachines speakers.  The on-board sound doesn't seem to work either and he installed the drivers for that too.  Is it the speakers?

hmm if both onboard and sound card has no sound, its highly possible its the speakers, get some headphones and test

Did you disable the onboard sound before installing the add-on card? Could be the two conflicting.

Turns out he just had to disable the sound card and now the integrated audio works.

Integrated uses more system resources than separate sound cards do, but why use a cheap soundcard if you have say 7.1 built-in.  It's like choosing the lesser of two evils.  You def. have to weigh the options.

if you want maximum performance for gaming play, then i would use the card.

if you use headphones or simple speakers and wouldn't, get the full 7.1 experience, might as well use the card.

But if you have a nice speaker setup (or good headphones), and are happy with how BF2 runs for now, go ahead and use on board sound.

I went from onboard sound to x-fi xtreme music, and gained around 5-10fps

It's just that he disabled the on-board and the card didn't work.  Then he reversed it and the integrated works.  His speakers, like I said, are crappy emachines speakers from the last comp he had that don't even have a volume control, you have to use the keyboard to change the audio.  He says he doesn't even care about the sound quality though.  He just doesn't like to mess around with computer stuff.  If it were me, I definately would've tried to get the card working.  Any sound card over 10$ is usually much better than on-board.  Oh well, I put my integrated sound on medium and it doesn't sound crappy at all and this is a 2002 computer, so I told him to put it on medium because it would work fine on medium.  A shame about the card though.  Maybe I should take it off his hands since he's not gonna be using it, lol.  That's not actually a bad idea come to think of it.
