We don't need a HUGE military but we need an actual military not just a few guys with P.O.S guns so that we could defend ourself if we were attacked. It shows that we're not a country that will let others push us around. Our military is something pretty sad IMO.
and who is attacking Canada?... i toss this question to anyone from any country... What are the chances your country will invade Canada?.... i refuse to get into an argument over this... good luck with life BornToKill67
His point being if anyone were to attack us, we would have no way to defend ourselves. I am sure willing volunteers would enlist to provide the manpower, but the resources are what we lack. It's never a bad idea to be prepared.

Our military is on the lacking end even compared to some smaller countries. As long as we use our Armed Forces smart, its ok to have a regular sized force.

The US would go apeshit if invaders were to set foot in Canada. If I may take a quote from Emperor's New Groove, "no touchy!" Canadian politicians realize this, even if it hurts Canadian military pride.

I think the desire here is to at least keep a token military force an elite token military force.

The "biggest" problem of our country is that it is a "small" country.

1.  The obsession with rights at the expense of responsiblities - "ooo, I broke into your house and cut myself breaking a window - I want compensation!"

2.  Immigration - not that it isn't necessary; according to the latest figures we need about 200,000 to make up the shortfall in birth rates but we're not selective enough.  Unless of course the criteria is tribal warlords, drug barons and knife wielding ethic groups who hate each other.  There's been a 37% increase in knife crime where I live in the last 2 years - apparently I'm racist according to the local council if I draw any connection to it to the 2,000 kurds that have moved into the area in the last two years.  We want doctors, teachers, researchers - we want people who are willing to build a life here and make a contribution to the nation that has adopted them.  Is that too much to ask?

3.  "Multiculturalism" - bollocks; as an English person I'm marginalised and demonised my the intellectual elite as a "yob", "beer-obsessed football hooligan".  Expressions of my national pride are viewed as inappropriate and insensitive.  Being Welsh, Scottish or Irish is fine as is any other nationality.  There are more St Patrick's Day celebrations than people who know when St George's Day is.  It hardly surprising people like the July 7th bombers find alternative cultural identities when being English is consistently equated with being a racist thug.  Making an equation like that is no different than saying all muslims are suicide bombers.  This is in part causing the rise in popularity in the BNP, as repellant as that is.

4.  The burgeoning underclass - call them what you will; chavs, charvers, townies, scavvies but don't call them working class.  I'm working class as were my parents.  They are not because they don't fucking work.  They are the first generation of kids whose parents have never worked and their ideas and attitudes are born of that.  They believe that, somehow, all that they ever wanted will land on their laps eventually - be it a lottery win, TV stardom or just the state bailing them out.  Hey - it worked for Jade Goody and that twat Michael Carroll.  Don't want to get a job though - might miss their audition for X-Factor.  In the mean time employers across the country have to turn to immigrant labour because the local workforce aren't interested in getting their hands dirty.

1. Our less than stellar record in dealings with indigenous peoples.  Totally at odds with how we see ourselves.
2. A tendency to see ourselves as above the fray, and somehow "better" than Americans.  That actually passes for national identity, in some people's minds.
3. The same things everybody else mentioned, common to most countries.  Dishonest politicians; Greed and corruption; people with that special combination of ignorance and aggression, etc.

2), yeah i totally agree with you mate. It's got some damn bad that only 3% of our population now actually native australians! I mean whats up with that!.

4), totally agreement.

IMO though, i think some of the worst problems with australia right now are

1)Our politicians, spending on things we don't need, doing things in their own interest and not the public interest.

2)Anglo-Aborigine relations. We aussies pride ourselves on living in one of the most liveable countries in teh world, but the thorn in our side is how the anglo majority relate to the Aborigines. One journey to Alice Springs, Darwin, Port Augusta (take ya pick) shows how badly we have messed up this proud minority's culture and their history. We need to spend more money on aboriginal health and education to bring most of our country's poverty stricken natives out of that poverty.

Theres a few others, but it would take too long to go through.

1) Tremendously corrupt officials and ineffective state system.
2) Birth/death ratio far in the minus. We lose 900000 people annually. The country is getting empty. Soon the Chinese will take over everything that's beyond Ural mountain range.
3) For our economy oil is like heroine for drug addict. As soon as the oil prices fall down, we're fucked. We need to develop industry asap, while we still have those petrobucks.

Northern Ireland's biggest problem still is 'The Troubles' The biggest problem atm is the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) who continue to stall and hold up the devolved government the people crave as they hold out for yet more concessions at the expense of the Nationalist people. Its as if all these people's deaths meant shit all. We are on the brink of a lasting peace, yet the DUP flirt with this peace in order to further political gain. They should be ashamed. The young people of this country demand a stable government to build our crumbled economy on. Its the old crustation Ian Paisley at 80 years old who is still stuck in the past and who has in stowed this feeling of a people under siege by catholics in the Unionist ppl. He started his own church, political party and at a time his own private army (the red caps). Part of the message he preaches in the Free Presbyterian Church is that The Pope, the spiritual leader of Billions of ppl around the world as well as 45% of the people of N.Ireland is the anti Christ. His political party which is tied to his religious movement are now the biggest party in Northern Ireland and this man preaches hate and labels us the catholic ppl "followers of Satan" His own words. Surely he should be trying to unit the ppls of this country, but instead he continues to drive a wedge between us. We have killed each other for 30 years over religion, you would think that we might move away from it, but instead the person who holds most sway now is a religious zealot. Most of the  DUP are ministers in Paisleys church or at least followers and they quote the old testament in the government chambers on every issue.

I can say without reservation that I wish Ian Paisley would die. I have never thought this of anyone else before, but for the good of this country I wish he would.

The freeloading Immigrant problem we have.
Don't get me wrong there are a few that come over here and work and do good things like become Doctors and such but the majority just come here to sponge off our all too liberal benefits system.

Some come here illegally but still get to stay, get given free housing, every benefit under the sun and then still try to screw the system by working on the side as well as getting benefit thus screwing the exact same institution that welcomed them and clothes and feeds them.

It's getting to be a real bone of contention here, and whats worse is that some of these Immigrants have gone on to become part of radical terrorist groups that plot attrocities against the very country that gave them safe haven.

As I see it, the biggest problem we have here in the Republic of Ireland is that the incoming generations of Irish people have lost touch with our past. Ireland has transformed from being one of the poorest countries in Europe to being the best performing economy (and second richest to Luxembourg) in the EU, all in the space of about 10 years. I remember the hardship my family and I had to endure trying to get by in rural Ireland in the 80s. This current generation has no concept of what 'hardship' means and as a result Ireland is becoming as materialistic and shallow as the rest of the west. People are more concerned about Ipods and salary increases than they are in the values that made Ireland great - hospitality, friendliness, charity, hard-graft and determination in the face of adversity, cultural heritage and the fact we could be happy even if we had little.
The 'new Irish' are soft and shallow and if they don't cop on then there is gonna be chaos when the global economy finally takes a nosedive.

Another problem we have is the eventual implosion of Northern Ireland. When we finally win back the north by democratic means (which isn't too far off) - the loyalists/unionists will kick off a civil war that might decimate the island.

1. The entire country itself. I'd be happy to get rid of those arrogant and ungrateful bastards in the south, along with that bunch of villains called the monarchy so we can finally have a Republic of Flanders.

2. The political parties. None really represents what I want (suppose that's true for all democracies but it bothers me that I can't vote invalid anymore ever since elections have been conducted with computers - about 8 years ago, when I first had to vote - forcing me to vote for one of these parties).
- Socialists: I like our social support system but too many shitbags are allowed to make use of it and the socialist party seem to take pride in supporting the (borderline) criminal. Softies when it comes to crime and punishment thereof. They just want to cuddle every1 like babies.
- Liberals: Granted, I like a little bit of liberal influence in the government, but if the liberals had their way they'd start tearing down the social support system taking it away from people that really need and deserve it. A bit better on the crime theme, but still far from sufficient.
- Roman Catholics: Historically extremely corrupt and all about bending over and taking it up the ass from the king and the Vatican. Changed their name couple of years ago and rejuvenated the party, but the essence of corruption remains. Also, stands for christian / roman catholic values which is a major downside. Has been trying to snoop voters away from the next party by playing the pro-Flemish card every once in a while.
- Right extremists: Positive: a) as their name implies (Flemish Interest) they are very focused on the anti-Belgian idea and for an independant Flemish republic. b) zero tolerance to crime and strict immigration policy. Negative: most partymembers are racist making it a racist party and like the roman catholics they uphold christian/roman catholic values which is completely unacceptable.
- Communists: so small I actually shouldn't mention them. Lost all credibility as communists by forming an election cartel with a muslim party a couple of years ago. Not to mention their cuddling policy.
- Greens: Half of them have no political backbone as they were communists who abandoned ship when the Berlin wall fell. Which means they're also cuddlers like the socialists and the communists.

3. Crime. Mostly that caused by immigrants. And the lack of political will to do anything about it because that would be racist. Yes, weeding out criminals is racist.

4. Immigrants don't have to adapt. We have to adapt to them and endure their racist and sexist (well considering every woman as nothing but a fucktoy goes a little beyond sexism but for lack of a better word...)  .

In the uk, unemployment is rising at an alarming rate....so many job losses, i think in the last 3 months unemployment rose by 130,000 people, making it 1.5 million unemployed overall, too many companies going bust and shutting down, and ford may go bust meaning another 50,000 jobs are at stake.

The crippling consumer debt, standing at 1.3 trillion pounds, eventually this will start effecting our economy and people will become poor.
