Please search, believe me when I say there is PLEANTY around the site on this topic.
At the moment it serves no real purpose, it is just a virtual 'high-five' system - you give positive karma to the posts you find helpful or amusing and give negative to those posts which are useless, spam, abusive etc. It seems like an excuse for immature people to try and wreck the whole system for others though, so you'll find you'll get a lot of unexplained negative karma, (or at least i do.)
I think you can start giving karma when you've got at least ten posts. Until then, have +1 on me.

It doesn't really "work" persay. It's just a number proving your worth on these forums. However, you'll notice that people with the most to say usually don't have the highest number since people give negative karma whenever they disagree with you, which isn't the point behind it.
Anyway, you can give it out once you have 10 posts at a rate of 10 karma points, be them negative or positive, per 24 hour period.

You can give karma after you have 10 posts in the forums... You give karma according to how good the post is by click either +1 or -1 at the bottom right of their post......
