i am currently in the market for a new graphics card as the one which i have now can only just come with playing the game on single player and becomes extremely difficult when online. I am getting 512 up 128 down speed broadband within the next two weeks and would love to be able to play the game properly when i do. i have a few friends who play and one is saying to me to go with an ATI because they are cheaper than nVidia (as he has an ATI) while the other is saying to go with nVidia because BF2 is optimised fro their cards and will therefore perform better.

I don't have much knowledge of the technical sides of the computer world and as a consequence cannot work out what makes one card better than the other.

I am looking at either an nVidia 6800gs (approx $300) or an ATI radeon x800xl (approx $250) and all prices are in australian dollars.

Any suggestions for which to go for would be much apreciated as i am seriously confused about it and don't want to waste my money on a card which isn't as good as the other. If you could include the reasoning for which card you are suggesting i would also be very grateful and if there are other cards out there for around $300 australian (or whatever that is in you currency) that would be great

Cheers

nVidia forever.

No issues with any game.

IMHO - I would go for the ATI Radeon 1800XT.
I saved up for it and there is no better card out there.  I've maxed my graphics and even went to "custom"
on some options in BF2.  I get such detail and so much better game play - it's like watching HDTV.

IMHO I would go with the ATI Radeon AX800 Pro - its like 200 or so USD, and you can flash a new BIOS to it super easy to unlock 4 more pipelines making it a 16 pipeline card.  I run BF2 on full high settings and the only lag I ever get is from these ingernal server crashes

Get an X800, they're a somewhat high end card.......species.  They're cheaper than the 6800GS and more people use them it seems, which could help you if you needed help installing it because more people will be able to help you.

Get a x800gto.
Faster than any Nvidia counterparts in that price range.
Or if you're on a buget, get a x1600pro 256MB.

The x1600pro also has AGP models if that's what you meant.
