I currently own an ATI x1800 256MB but I'm thinking about switching to a nVIDIA card because I heard that:

ATI : AMD :: nVIDIA : Intel

I have an Intel P4 at around 3.0Ghz and think it might be time for a change. Just wanted to see what everyone else thinks is better for an Intel Processor.

Thanks.

nVIDIA for me, running an XFX 6800XT 256mb.

I haven't actually heard about much of an advantage running AMD and ATI or nVIDIA and Intel. I prefer AMD atm, but soon Intel will take over.

I always buy ATI cards. It seems to be more powerful...

My friend, for example, has an nVIDIA 6600. He plays Counter-Strike: 2.0 (shhh I know it's a noob game, it was just for a video test ) with 30-40 FPS average. I have a Radeon X550 (not the best card in the world) and run with 4x AA, all other settings high/beyond high and get 100 average. 70 lowest and 250 highest.

This depends on many factors, it depends what is in your rig, what game you are playing and so on.
If you look at benchmarks of 2 video cards on various games, you will see one is more powerful on one game than the other card and vice versa.

those two cards are in completely different categories though... that is like saying a 2.0ghz p4 versus a 3.0ghz p4, it is apples to oranges.

and as for amd:ati-intel:nvidia that is bs.

I vote for nVidia because I have had less problems with them than ATI's (had a 9800pro before my current card - was nice, but not as good and constant as my current card)

Well, by far AMD > Intel but as for ATI and NVIDIA..it's a toss-up and depends on what you're looking for in each. If you want more multimedia based card ATI is the way to go, and if you want just hardcore graphics and performance I'd say NVIDIA is your best bet there (both assuming the newest products each).

Nvidia with AMD cpu pwns all. ATI plain sucks and so does intel. Even though i have no other choice but to use an intel.

AMD is good for another few weeks until conroe comes out.

AMD and NVIDIA are the enemies, lol.  I use the ATi Radeon 9600 paired with a 2.2GHz P4.  I'm an Intel and ATi guy, and I have no reason (or money) to switch to AMD, as I have never used an AMD.  Well if I did, it wasn't for gaming.  Nor do I have the money or reason to switch to NVIDIA.

The ati cards are better at shader rendering, nvidia better at texture filling.

Ati doesn't suck, the x1900xtx far outperforms other nvidia cards ( exept the 7950X2 )
And currently ati is more future proof.

But again, its just a momentum, the tides can change by the day.

oh - how i love the fanboy wars.
anyhow, i currently run ati (x1900xt), before i had nvidia (gf fx 5200 256MB), before i had a ati, and before that i cantg remember. i.e. just go with the most bang for buck
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

lol agree bf2 is better w/ nvidia cards, depends on what games u play.

and intel is w/ ati and AMD is more towards Nvidia... but i personally think the partnership is only within the mobos ie nvidia sli mobo and crossfire mobos.

That's because ATi and Intel seem to be the underdogs.  AMD and Nvidia just whoop everything the other releases.  Except the Conroe of course, but AMD probably has something in the works to combat that with.

*swaggers in*

Since I am the most qualified on the subject matter of graphics cards (specifically the nvidia 7900GTX and ATI X1900XTX) they can be summed up as follows:

7900GTX:

Pros:
No Catalyst Control Center
Consistent framerate
Excellent drivers

Cons:
The 7900GTX series has some hardware issues, unfortunately I had the bad luck to get those.

X1900XTX:

Pros:
Higher performing than the 7900GTX
Slighty cheaper than the 7900GTX

Cons:
Sometimes inconsistent framerate
Flaky drivers
Catalyst control center (if you want AVIVO)

My system:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
DFI Lanparty UT SLI-D
2x 1GB OCZ DDR500
Sapphire 512MB X1900XTX

As to AMD vs. Intel, currently AMD has the lead. I'm taking all these "Core2 is the pwns" news with a pinch of salt as you lot should be, all the big companies lie.
You need to remember also of price per performance, if core2 comes out and has the most powerful desktop processor yet costs massively more than a close AMD equivalent than what's the point?

Chances are when Intel release core2 AMD will do a big price cut meaning on a price per performance ranking AMD chips will be better. (ie. it'll be cheaper to buy an equivalent AMD chip over an Intel one)

AMD and nVidia forever!!  7800GS the best AGP vid card out there and AMD 3800+ X2 oc to 2.4 GHZ runs bf2 and any other game at high settings w/AA and AF.  nVidia is so smooth with the games I play - couldn't ask for anything better!

Im not sure who would ever buy hardware simply on a brand name, nor would I recommend something to a client/customer based on name. I find the best performing for my application, whether or not it is ATI or Nvidia.

for now AMD has nothing to combat conroe.

i just want to buy things the most bang for the buck. but some games are optimized for nvidia or ati.

At this point I prefer ATi cards.  Their drivers are every bit as good as NV unless you are a Linux user.  I recommend looking at what you want to do with the card, as well as the primary games you play, and then do some research.  There are benchmarks out there for many of the most popular games.

I don't know who said that BF2 runs better on NV cards, but right now all the benchmarks put ATi cards with better performance there.  Yes, it is a TWIMTBP title, but ATi does perform better.  On the flip side, HL2 is a GITG title, and the new NV cards actually do better at that.

yeah, what is actually wrong with fraps? it will never show more than 100fps, even when i paracute on an empty server. I'm bound to get more frames than when i pop a smoke granade right (cause even then i get 100fps)?

Are you using an LCD or CRT?  If it's a CRT, and that is your refresh rate, then you probably have VSync on.
