What is the meaning of being buffered or registered for RAM?  Also, should I buy two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 820141173R  Just so I can upgrade from this cursed 512MB.  Yes, I still use PC2100.  No, i'm not getting a better rig any time soon.  Also, will this DDR SDRAM work in a slot that has been using normal old DDR RAM?

Registered = buffered

my understanding is the Registered/Buffered RAM has a Register/Buffer chip on it. the motherboard chipset writes/reads to this instead of directly to the ram modules

I'm not too sure on this... i think they are the same thing...

Do you mean...

"Is it worth getting more RAM?"

OR

"Is this the correct RAM? And will it work?"

Can somebody clear this is up and tell me whether it works or not?

Theres a website that scans your motherboard then tells you what type of RAM you should buy what's the maximum your motherboard will take, and a rough price guide.

Can't remember what it is at the moment but I'll dig it out for you and post it here after I finish work.

O.K. thanks.  I look forward to it.  512MB is NOT fun.  I've never played BF2 with anything over 512 actually.  I'm missing out badly, lol.

Sorry for the delay mate almost forgot.  try this site.  Its a UK site but it'll give you an idea

You might need to know what model motherboard you've got, or you can just use the system scanner tool.

So can I use DDR SDRAM in place of the DDR RAM or would that cause compatability issues because it's SDRAM?

Also, why does crucial.com recommend PC2700 RAM when i'm currently using PC2100, does that mean I can go higher?

yes. means ur mobo can support faster ram, get normal ram... not registered or buffered or ECC... they are mostly for servers

Can I get DDR SDRAM or does it have to be DDR RAM?

SDRAM = Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory.  I think you are not understanding that RAM, that isn't Rambus, is SDRAM.  SDR (Single Data Rate) is the old style RAM, where DDR (Double Data Rate) is what you are using now, and need, but they are both still SDRAM; even DDR2 is still SDRAM.

You can also get faster RAM that what you are using.  If it were me, I would get PC3200.  It is no more expensive, and will be easier to use down the road, even though it is being phased out by DDR2.  Just remember the PC3200 means the RAM is rated to run at 200MHz, but can obviously run slower than its rated speed, so running at 133MHz like your current RAM is not a problem.  In fact, I have an old system at home with an XP1700+ and KT266A chips that is running with 1GB of PC3200 RAM.

As noted already, registered and buffered RAM are the same thing.  Buffering is primarily seen in servers where very large amounts of RAM are used.  The buffering delays the read/write signal by one clock cycle because the buffering electronics take the load off the memory controller, but it keeps the signal clean and strong to prevent signal loss and ground bouncing.  I would not get registered RAM.

I would get PC3200 DDR-SDRAM, unbuffered, non-ECC.

So I could safely run PC3200 without having to change anything in the BIOS?

Nevermind, I found out the answer.  But if I put it in the slot and it switches down to speed, will it go to PC2700 speed or PC2100 speed?
