They are trying everything under the sun to extort/strongarm the United States into concessions when in reality, they have no bargaining power. Better than that, Iran is attempting to follow suit.

My idea: Let North Korea launch the missile, that way we can test our missile defense system. See if our taxpayer money went to shit or not.

IIRC, the last missile defense tests didn't go so well, and we even knew where the target was being launched from, where it was going and when.  It strikes me as a fundamentally flawed idea -- it will always be easier to design a bigger MIRV than counter it, and how many warheads need to get through?

Anyway, who can say about NK?  They're obviously pretty nutty.  Any idea why they're insisting on bilateral talks?  That's kinda weird...

EDIT: for clarity.

You do know that launching a test missile isn't considered an act of war, while activating a defense system and shooting it down Is, right?

I'm well aware that it won't be fired at us. The fact they want bilateral talks with us, when both Japan and South Korea are screaming at them not todo the test is funny.

Also Marc, based upon prior statements, we can't trust anything the North Koreans say (I'll wait for your *can't trust anything the the US says* statement), so activating a missile defense system should be SOP. The fact ehy talk about us batthing in a sea of fire, gives us grounds to activate, imho.

Key word here is Defense. I find it hard an act of defense can be considered an act of aggression.

Not quite where I wanted to go with this thread.

Plus, we can bet on wether the missile will fire, will we be able to stop it.

Think of the fun!

Well, they are not firing this missile at the US.  If we send a naval fleet over there just to shoot off the THAAD and bring their test missile down, that's aggression.

If the missile comes into our own defendable airspace, then it will be shot down by all means and considered an act of agression by NK towards the US.  Simple as that.

Agree with Marconius.  Ultimately, I don't see how the US (or other nuclear nations) try to mandate who gets to join the nuke club.  We are hardly in a position to mandate worldwide who can and who can't have this technology.  As with any tool, it can be harnessed for productivity or used for malice.  Granted, a missle certainly does imply malice.   However, as Iran was mentioned, I believe they have repeatedly stated that only wish to have nuclear power - which is an excellent source of power and shouldn't really be denied.  We should use it more here for that matter.  Anyway, as the only nation to actually USE nuclear weapons (granted, it did save lives ... no matter what anyone says) our hands are a bit too tarnished to be meddling in these affairs of the world.  Defend yourself from attack, but don't tell the enemy what they can and can't attack you with, or how they can or can't harness the basic powers of our universe.

the fact is. no matter what it thinks usa doesn't own the world. and they are not the world police. who knows whats going to happen, in 50 years time koreas missile tests might directly save the usa in some way.

as long as it stays in their country they shouldn't really have a case to answer too.

How can you test fire a long range missile in a state the size of alabama? The whole point of test firing a LONG RANGE MISSILE, is to see how FAR it will go.

Agree with this.

If a country has the capability to provide large amounts of power and heat to its people, they should be given every chance. However, the implementing of nuclear power should be done BY the UN. So that all rules and regulations can be adhered to and ensure no nuke happy group can weaponize it.

Sometimes, I get a feeling the US is a bit paranoid. NK is a tiny little country thousands of miles away, with a starving population and a communist regime. You know they pose no viable military threat.
Moreover, they can't do shit without your spy satellites taking a picture. What are you so worried about ?

NK wants to negotiate because they know their position is weak. China is the regional superpower, and they will make sure nothing bad happens in front of their doorstep.

That's the whole point of my thread. They should just STFU already. They are going to end up doing something stupid and getting our (US's) panties in a bunch. At which point we will fekk them up royally. They'll have nobody to blame but themselves.

Last missile test conducted by North korea flew over Japan. My statement has relevance. I believe that was only a 2 stage missile.

My statement was onyl to counter your "dumb ass" statement of a long range missile not being fired outside of a closet sized country.

if it flys over another country then they should get their bottoms smacked.

but you basically said that they cant test it without doing so. which is wrong.

I think we are agreeing but can't seem to communicate the fact to one another.

They might fire the test missile but they'll never attack the USA with the real thing for the same reason Russia never attacked during the Cold War,Mutual assured destruction

Edit: Ok, not EXACTLY the same as during the Cold War, since North Korea doesn't have nearly as much firepower as the US or as Russia did, But you get my point, Korea attack, US destroys them. Simple.

not to mention straight up is a valid test.  Really involves more control that way anyway.

They're just posturing, they know they'll get hammered if they try anything.  Hell, the US wouldn't have to do much to fuck them, just get rid of their food supply and in a year or two they'll starve.
